Rounding out Michigan's 2009 recruiting class

Submitted by Jorel on

Completely speculative uninformed but un-biased projection for Michigan's 2009 recruiting class. I'm guessing we find a way to take 22 in this class. If 20, I'd scrap a DE and an OL recruit. Bold indicates a verbal committment as of 8/4

QB (2)Kevin Newsome; Shavodrick Beaver

RB (2)Fitzgerald Touissant; Vincent Smith

Slot WR (2) Teric Jones, Jeremy Gallon

Outside WR (2)Bryce McNeal; a four or five-star wild card (Shaq Evans??)

OT (2)Michael Schoefield; a 3-star recruit

OG (1) – Either Kyle Koehne or Ricky Clemons

C - none

TE - none

DT (2) – William Campbell; Dequinta Jones

DE (2) – Craig Roh; Will Hill

LB (2)Jordan Barnes; Mike Jones; Brandin Hawthorne

S (2)Justin Turner; Isaiah Bell

CB (2)Dewayne Peace; Mywan Jackson

K (1) – Anthony Fera or Brendan Gibbons

P - none

So, yes, this means whiffing on:

  • CBs: Dre Kirpatrick, Darius Winston and Gabe Lynn
  • OTs: Marcus Hall, Chris Freeman and Brennan Williams
  • RB David Oku

And, yes, it means projecting:

  • DeWayne Peace as a CB
  • Justin Turner as a Safety (not sure why he is sometimes listed as a CB)
  • Teric Jones as a slot WR
  • Dequinta Jones as a DT
  • Mywan Jackson as a CB

Whiffing on Dre Kirkpatrick and Marcus Hall is quite a bit different than whiffing on Brennan Williams and Darius Winston. Michigan has no shot at Kirkpatrick and Hall, and never did.

This can usually change daily, but at the moment, my best guess:

QB: Newsome, Beaver

RB: Toussaint, V. Smith

Slot: T. Jones, Gallon

WR: McNeal, Thomas

OL: Schofield, Freeman

DE: LaLota/Roh/Graham, Tank Carradine

DT: Campbell, D. Jones

LB: Barnes, M. Jones, B. Hawthorne

CB: Winston, Turner (Michigan recruited him as a CB), M. Jackson, Peace

S: Bell

K: Fera

Random notes:

-I'm totally guessing on Todd Thomas at WR. His last update a month ago had Michigan and Pitt at the top of his list. Might be more wishful thinking than otherwise.

-The OL is murky. The rumor going around about Brennan Williams suddenly wanting to stay on the East coast is disconcerting, but hasn't been confirmed yet. If that turns out to be false, I'd include him and possibly remove Freeman (who might be crazy).

-It would be really, really bad if we whiffed on all three of Roh, Graham and LaLota. We NEED at least one of those guys. -Tank is a monster. If he has his grades and any other off-field issues sorted out, he should be #1 on the DE list, ahead of the aforementioned three.

-The latest Winston update was encouraging for UM. He basically has a final three of Arkansas, M, and Clemson. At the moment, I like Hopson's recruiting and Michigan's CB lineage in that battle.

-I'm not writing off Jelani Jenkins just yet. He hasn't done any narrowing down yet and has kept his cards very close to the vest. Until he starts narrowing down, Michigan has as good a shot as everyone else.

-I'm also not giving up on Shaq. His recruitment is kind of fuzzy. If Michigan can show him during this season that we're actually going to pass the ball and the WRs aren't just going to be blockers, I think there's a real chance Shaq will pick Michigan. That's a ways off, though.

Based on the random things I've read about Shaq Evans, it seems that he is actually considering Michigan. If we could get Darius Winston, that would be sweet. Donovan Warren is excellent, so imagine a secondary with two 5* CBs. People will think we're USC of the Midwest. Okay, not really. Plus, look at OSU's secondary with a bunch of 3* DBs. Not bad.

You know a ton about recruiting and seem to have great insider-ish info. Would love if you posted more often either on your own blog or diaries here. My list was complete uneducated guesses based on free info. Any list you come up with is much more credible. Personally, I enjoy reading thoughtful commentary on how we are looking for certain recruits rather than wishful thinking. Keep it coming, please!
