PDFT: Potential Dickinson Foul Trouble

Submitted by BeantownBlue on March 26th, 2021 at 1:10 AM

This is my first diary and I am writing from a recovery bed after hernia surgery.  So apologies in advance if any of my oxycodone induced ramblings seem oxycodone induced.

With my newfound, albeit temporary, free time, I would like to discuss/reflect on the elephant in our collective UM-fandom-party-room: Potential Dickinson Foul Trouble (PDFT).

I realize that PDFT has been discussed on the periphery of many of Brian’s posts, iMGoPodcasts, and board posts.  I write this diary as a way of sharing my own thoughts and as a way of giving PDFT a home base for ongoing discussion, debate, and thoughtful consideration.

My thoughts are:

  1. Hunter Dickinson is fucking great and I like our team a lot with him on it.  He’s got amazing touch around the rim, is an incredible passer, hits free throws, is a total disruptor on defense and makes me smile when he does something good and runs up the floor, singularly upright, while subtly flexing.

  2. I love our whole team and I love that coach Howard has created a culture that emphasizes comradery and unselfish play.  That said, I think Dickinson is the fulcrum to the unselfish approach.  His proficiency down low draws so much attention and his willingness/ability to dish back out to all our guys seems like a (the?) key reason we are the juggernaut we have become.

  3. I marveled throughout the first ⅘ of this season at how wild it was that he stayed out of foul trouble.  I can’t think of anyone his size/ability who seemed to draw so few fouls so consistently—-until late in the season.

  4. Though we could lose any of the potential upcoming matchups in the tourney for a variety of reasons, I also happen to think we could beat ANY team in the country (truly) with Dickinson staying out of foul trouble accompanied by a hot shooting night from 2-3 others.

  5. I humbly submit that PDFT is the most important factor determining whether or not we advance in each and any game we play from here.

Losing 3 out of 5 games toward the backend is obviously partly the product of Livers/Brooks injuries but it also seems pretty closely linked to Dickinson’s newfound propensity to pick up cheap fouls (and the consequently increased amount of time he spends on the bench in key stretches).

This is a good time to say that I also LOVE Austin Davis and think he is super underrated and valuable offensively.  I told my son earlier this year that Davis gives us depth that could make us a final four team.  I still believe that.  But I also think it’s fair to say that our team is a significantly better defensive team with Dickinson’s disruption near the rim.

Ok, this is all super obvious and you all know these things BUT here’s what I’m getting to:

I am not interested in concern trolling.  Of course he could foul out in any game and that would be bad.  He could also revert to early season form and this could all be moot.  Rather I would like to:

  1. Invite analysis from MGoExperts about whIch teams remaining in the tournament are most likely to exploit/benefit from PDFT.

  2. Ask the question:  Is it possible that Hunter is exacerbating the problem and kind of inviting refs to call cheap fouls with the way he reacts to their calls? It seems like his go-to response is a pretty big “are-you-fucking-kidding-me” kind of hands-in-the-air incredulity just about every time.  I don’t want Hunter to lose his fire but is it possible he could reduce the ticky-tack calls by keeping it a touch more stoic when called?  Or do refs pretty much ignore this stuff and call it as they see it?

  3. For experts and former players:  can any of this be coached?  If so, what kind of things do coaches do in a practice/film room to address issues like this? Is there any hope that we see reduction in PDFT this tournament?

Thanks for indulging me in a very long post about a very specific line of discourse and inquiry.  All I’ve got is time and my phone.  Thoughts, responses, and humiliating repudiations are welcome (though go easy on my dudes—it’s been a long day and I’ve already received the closest thing to a literal dong punch than I have ever before experienced :))

Good luck with your recovery.

Good luck with your question (#2) about Dickinson's reaction being a possible reason for more fouls. I asked the same about Wagner a while back and got some down voting.

Plus, what East Quad said: trust Howard to coach him up.

Yeah, I imagine folks don’t want to hear criticism of HD’s reactions to calls.  I usually agree with his reactions when he makes them.  I just think he could tone it down a touch.  To reiterate, I think he is the fucking best so this is not a disparagement of his character.  Just strategic analysis.

i think that despite the weighty strain of the NCAA competition that the team will mesh around HD.  and he always has the team in stitches which is good for morale and support, keeps everyone together.

So far, I think the only outlier was the TX Southern game where he bodied their much smaller center with the same effort/method as he would body Cofi.  The difference is that he knocked the TSU center into the third row.  That's an awareness issue or maybe even a rule issue.  Should you allow centers to bang their opponent into submission but then penalize a bigger guy for being big? Cofi knocks everyone down and doesn't get called for it. The announcers tried to frame it as he was hitting them in the neck and face.  He was just flat out bigger and that is where his arms fall on them. The flagrant foul was a joke - the measure is supposed to be did the elbow move faster than the body.  It did not.

HD's biggest problem right now is closing out on smaller guys and getting ticky tack fouls that add up and cause a problem.  Give them their 18 foot jump shots and guard the rim, big fella. Avoid the cheap fouls and live to play on.

Yes to this (re: perception of HD fouling vs shorter guys). I was rewatching FSU v Colorado and I was thinking RaiQuan Gray presents a similar issue.  He’s a total bowling ball, unafraid to dribble into the middle and use his body (which is actually denser than HD but shorter).  And Gray on defense seems like he could draw similar fouls simply because he can body up with equal strength but his head is just naturally in the HD elbow zone.  Also, FSU has a bunch of big bodies to throw at Dickinson so they can spread the fouls out.  This may be a game where (as Brian notes) we’ll see more Austin Davis in Zone.

Cue the Weird Al 'Living with a Hernia' soundtrack!  In all seriousness, hope you recover quickly and that your 1.10am post isn't a sign of pain induced sleeplessness.

Great questions.  This isn't an answer to any of them, but I have been wondering if all the love and focus that Juwan has been receiving will lead to a friendlier whistle for PDFT?

(and also wondering if Juwan's growing reputation as a coach and Michigan's standing in the Big Ten will help us in years to come to have a friendlier whistle)

Perhaps wishful thinking on all fronts!

Thanks.  That’s a great point about future friendlier whistles.  Certainly the credentials associated with “coach of the year” can only enhance credibility.  Hopeful thinking but also likely true. Wouldn’t it be something to add “final four in his first time to the tournament” to his resume.

Good questions imho.  Good luck with your recovery.  Have had some of the same ?'s myself, w/no answers.  Thanks for helping me to start getting my head right for Sunday's game.

You’re a good man SD Larry.  Thanks. Perhaps the FSU game is the only way we’ll learn.  Although maybe that’s a game we could win with more Austin Davis? His patience and pump fakes may be a great fit for attacking FSU’s block first approach.  Maybe Alabama is the first true test of PDFT?

The fouls give HD some rest so he can come back stronger. I have not noticed much drop off when Davis replaces him at center. My real concern is that Dickenson will be a one and done. I would like to have him for another year to accompany the standout recruiting class coming in for the 21-22 season. We might be looking at the no. 1 seed of the 1 seeds next year.

With Alabama out, I am less worried about Dickinson foul trouble for the next game (UCLA). I think Davis is a good matchup vs. the Bruins.  We will need HD as many minutes as we can get against theoretical Gonzaga but that can wait for now.

P.S. I loved HD’s lack of reaction on the first foul of today’s game (the cheap one he picked up on the screen).  A smile and non-reaction was the perfect way to handle that moment.  No other cheap calls the rest of the way!  Whether he was coached or is just learning, I am happy with the future trajectory of PDFT.
