2010 Recruiting: The Remaining Spots

Submitted by Marley Nowell on
According to recruiting expert and MGoBlog fan favorite TomVH Michigan will only have 25 total scholarships available for the 2010 Recruiting Class.  There were a lot of visits announced recently so I wanted to see where we stand with the last spots available in our class.

Total Committed Players: 22 (21 Verbal Commits + Adrian Whitty)

Heavy Michigan Leans / Possible Silent Commits: 3
Tony Grimes            CB  Rivals 3*  Scout 4*
Clarence Murphy     DE  Rivals 3*  Scout 3*
Josh Furman            LB  Rivals 3*  Scout 4*

If all of those guys Go Blue that is 25 total recruits...we'll see what happens.

Upcoming Official Visits
Jonathan Hankins  DT  Rivals 3*  Scout 3*
Torrian Wilson        OL  Rivals 4*  Scout 3*
Rashad Knight       CB  Rivals 4*  Scout 3*

Who knows if any of these guys commit.
  • Jonathan Hankins was rumored to heavily favor Michigan and finally got the offer.  Definitely a position of need.
  • Torrian Wilson is still committed to Stanford and you know Harbaugh is telling him Michgan doesn't stack up academically.
  • Rashad Knight missed his previously scheduled official visit.  We have several DB verbal commits but the team could still use more.
If any of those guys were to commit its possible that a previously verbally committed player may look elsewhere.  Given our depth chart the only position where we have an abundance of players is the Slot Receiver position.  Michigan currently has 5 Slot Receivers on scholarship (and possibly Denard Robinson in the future).  So I took a look at our verbal commits slated to play Slot.

D.J. Williamson  Rivals 3*  Scout 2*
Tony Drake          Rivals 3*  Scout 3*
Drew Dileo          Rivals 3*  Scout 3*

  • Michigan identified Dileo early and seemed to really want him from the press that came out about his commitment.
  • Drake comes from a team stacked with D-1 prospects and has played well this season.
  • Don't know much about Williamson...might switch to Safety which is still a position of need.
I would think some these guys would unfortunately be told to look elsewhere if more defensive recruits want to commit.

Obviously there are a lot of rumors and speculation behind this information. Anything can happen between now and the first Wednesday in February.

GO BLUE!

I hope he doesn't decommit if only for his speed. I can't remember the exact time but he was blazing fast in track as a junior. Hope that translates to football.

we ask both Dileo (of whom I'm a big fan) or Williamson (same) to try spending some time at DB or Safety? I get the feeling the coaches really like both. Dileo brings his returns and Williamson brings speed. If they're openminded about defense, then we can focus on the d-line and o-line. Thoughts?

Dileo is an offensive player/special teamer all the way. He plays some defense in high school, but that's not where his future lies. There was some talk that Williamson could play defense, but he's also only played defense sparingly. And, from what I've read, the reports on his defensive play are not glowing.

alright lets be realistic. carvin johnson wont play. most of the cb prospects will blow in college ball. we have too much slot guys. get rid of one. they both wont a big impact. we need linemen period. rrod is obsessed with his skill positions

I hate to say this but none of these guys will see much time this year. As ballyhooed as most of these guys have been their high school career, they're not used to the speed and size of everyone at the college level so don't bank on to many of these guys getting much game repetition in 2010. We may see a cornerback, but only by default because of our lack of depth. We're still green in the defensive backfield but Turner and Emelien should help out a bit more, but we're screwed if Warren ain't returning. Honestly, I'm more concerned at the RB spot...I'm not sold on Shaw and Smith doesn't seem ready for full-time duty. I've heard good things about Toussaint so here's to wishing for someone to step up... ..I agree with many peeps here that our D-Line and linebacking corps are of greater concern to me. Mouton and Ezeh need better years, and hopefully Demens and Fitzgerald step up...

Talking about potentially too many recruits...Many on the defensive side of the ball. Very exciting time...Now can RR coach em up, Barwis build them up, and leaders emerge in the program. Given RR and Barwis history I am sold that they will develop the talent. With G Robinson, I am still a bit nervous on his schemes and passion...but again he was dealt a tough hand this past year. As for student athlete leaders emerging, that is always a crap shoot. We just have to hope that Warren returns and some of the younger guys learned from Graham on how to be a leader....even when in difficult times. I was hoping Forcier would be that guy, but it is clear from his freshman year that he has a lot of growing up to do, with all the media issues, etc. As much as I criticized Lloyd for being a poor game day coach who lacked innovation and scheme design, he was great at turning young men into leaders, even after they had tough starts and issues following the program (Chris Perry, Braylon Edwards, David Terrell, Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington)...Wow, recievers really are divas....Anyways, point being, RR needs to find some leadership on this team. We know he can cultivate talent and X and O with the best of them. Now he needs to build character on a very young team.

Malik was never offered a scholarship by Michigan. They might be trying to convince him to walk on, but frankly, he's not good enough for an offer from UM.

while this is a nice little article, it leaves a lot to be desired... #1) Other players that we're still in on... - Beachum, Ash - Murphy, Bryant - Parker, Anderson - Boyd #2) Players that might go elsewhere, get grey-shirted, etc. - Williamson: I'd guess that he'd be one of the first to be let go. - Kinnard/Paskorz: No reason to take two quicks. The one our staff likes least might be gone. If we take Murphy or Bryant, both could be. - Avery/Talbott(CB)/Witty: There's no reason to take all three. If we need Talbott (DT), than Talbott (CB) isn't going to be the one we lose. - Talbott(DT): If Ash commits, or Hankins and Beachum, then Talbott (DT) might not needed, in with case Talbott (CB) is also gone. - Vinopal/Johnson: If one of Parker/Knight/Anderson commits, then there's no need to take both of these lower rated safties.
