WTKA Roundtable 3/10/2022: You Can't Get That in the G League Comment Count

Seth March 10th, 2022 at 10:22 AM

Things discussed:

  • At Ohio State: The Devante' Jones Game. Craft in his game finally adapted to the Big Ten.
  • His shooting changed OSU's plan to go under screens.
  • T-Will: Unlocked by transition.
  • Officiating was unacceptable. Not the usual bad Boroski stuff: They let Liddell get away with everything.
  • Michigan defense: brought doubles from the baseline to generate 11 steals. Turnovers and ORebs were the difference in the game.
  • Houstan: Not a guy who can shoot off screens. He needs to be set. His defense was strong but against just-a-shooters. Offseason work: Learn to finish. He can get to rim but he's terrible once there.
  • Indiana: One good player team. Race Thompson is a guy who works on a better team. Bad matchup for Michigan at guard.
  • Can we get these guys back? Houstan yes, other guys not likely? Seth: have to change their mindsets.
  • If Michigan can put $1 million on the table for Hunter, sure. Is Michigan ready to do that? Makes the most sense if he's getting good advice. Diabate too. But what's the likelihood they're getting good advice?
  • Break: Bilas thinks you should be allowed to dick punch if you're Boeheim's kid.
  • Football: McCarthy injury, how it affects the QB competition.
  • Hockey: Playing MSU is bad because you're surprised next series when you have to play hockey again.

He didn't make a shot. That's kind of a big deal.

Houstan not spending the entire summer shuttling between the weight room and running off screens to hit shots would be a bad idea.

I can only assume that IMG kept him from overdoing it with lifting because of his age. It's just hard to fathom how a 6'8" NBA prospect would be picked to lose in a dunk contest against Xavier Simpson.

Why are we talking about NIL like its the only consideration? Jones has to keep going to school to play at Michigan, he has to be willing to have coaching time restricted, etc. Its not just about money. Also Hunter can make a million dollars in europe.

Also the sets they are running for Houstan imply he hits those shots in practice which I think is part of a trend where a lot of it is mental and confidence for him where if he is comfortable he can hit those shots

Hunter also has Ziyah to keep him in Ann Arbor another year.  Idk, it's like people forget their time as undergrads was the best time of their lives.  Yes, for millions of dollars obviously you would leave, but if with NIL they can make a million AND spend a year on the greatest campus on Earth that's a great value proposition.

I agree with you on Houstan btw, the kid has an absolutely picture perfect beautiful jump shot, it's clear in an empty gym he can shoot with anybody in the world.  Just needs to find a way to settle the nerves on gameday.

Houstan is 4/18 from three in neutral site games this year. I do think there is an element of streakiness to his game that is more correlated with location than caused by it. His road numbers for example are hampered by a 1/16 stretch from @UCF through @Illinois. Outside of that 3 game stretch he is shooting 39.5% from 3 on the road, mostly powered by the combined 9/14 against Nebraska and Indiana.
