WTKA Roundtable 11/19/2020: Right That's Gonna Fix It Comment Count

Seth November 19th, 2020 at 11:29 AM

Things discussed:

  • The Wisconsin disaster: what's wrong with the program?
  • Craig is having technical difficulties.
  • Seth: FUNDAMENTALS. Decide what your system is and play the guys who are best at it. Give yourself a floor.
  • Sam says they're thinking of a QB change, trying new things to see what sticks.
  • Joe Milton broke down. Andrew Vastardis isn't getting it done.
  • Different guy is breaking down any play. Can't fix that in a week or three. Michigan's going to be under .500 this year.
  • You can see all the decisions that got them where they are, but where do you go from here?
  • "We're the Rutgers now."
  • Brian is Head Coach for a day.
  • Recruiting: Still works? Still works. Give JJ McCarthy and Junior Colson credit. 2022 5-star defensive backfield is on the way?
  • YES THEN WE TALK ABOUT THE HOCKEY

You guys might have noticed these get out more quickly this year. Since I'm on the thing I can just hit record on my computer and get the audio from there. That also means you get to hear us during commercial breaks. Might want to look at the video to see the goal line play we're talking about.

I believe that we should look seriously at the Wisconsin system.

Ten of the starters on offense are 4th or 5th year players (not Mertz).  There are five 5th year players, three on the offensive line.

Seven of the defensive starters are 4th or 5th year players.  There are six 5th year players on defense, 2 of the 3 defensive linemen.

Recruit linemen who are long, lean, and athletic (basketball players).  Do not worry about weight until they arrive on campus.  Redshirt.  Get to play in their 3rd or 4th year.

Our offensive team averages 2.64 years, by far the lowest in the Big Ten.  Almost 2 years per player less than Wisconsin.  Our only 4th/5th year offensive starters are first year starters.

Experience in the system, weight and strength matter.

More to come.

Thanks

Sam: "if you were in charge of the football team, what would you do right now to fix things?"

Brian, overtly incredulous: "Now? NOW?!"

That moment is going to be burned into my memory, I just know it. The incredulity in Brian's voice says more than words ever could. There is nothing to fix anymore. The program is currently dead.

I think Dylan McCaffery somewhere right now laughing out loud.   He should have been appointed as QB of this team.  He had the most experience, he ran the team pretty well, he could run (the RPO with success),  he could throw and he is smart enough to read defenses.

If Gattis picked Joe and Cade over Dylan and Harbaugh bought that, then shame on Harbaugh.  If Harbaugh anointed Joe and Cade over Dylan than shame on Harbaugh.  We will look back on that moment as one of the huge blusters of Harbaugh's tenure.

Also, what happened to "Speed in Space"?  I see the old, long developing plays that allow the defense to set up shop in Joe's front porch.  The offense looks like we progressed all the way to Jim's first year of NFL style plays.
