REMINDER: SETH & JOHN U BACON WILL BE HOSTING THE UM ALUMNI CLUB OF GREATER CHICAGO KICKOFF EVENT TONIGHT at 6pm CDT, 7pm Eastern. All are welcome. Jordan Glasgow's getting the Sigler Award.

1 hour and 26 minutes

We are back because we are supported by awesome sponsors. The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan I would be a trade magazine editor with uncool t-shirts.

Our associate sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, FuegoBox, and Information Entropy.

1. Defensive Line

starts at 1:00

The tackles are deeper and the ends are amazing, with all kinds of interesting new depth. Kwity Paye is the #1 freak of the year, and Aiden Hutchinson is the guy we think might be a 1st or 2nd rounder next year. So why are we so afraid? Oh right, because last year they were playing Carlo Kemp at nose and Jess Speight when they didn't have Kemp.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. Linebackers

starts at 26:12

A wildman and the safe man. Josh Ross looked good at WLB before looking not as good (against Wisconsin) at MLB then spending the year redshirting. Cam McGrone done busted out and is Bush if Bush wasn't born a savant. We expect Michael Barrett to take over the Viper spot, and be the backup WLB, but things get interesting when you imagine how Solomon figures into that.

3. Secondary

starts at 44:17

Oh dear. We recorded this before Faustin and Dax flipped who's getting tried at cornerback but the fear still applies. Not that we need to fear all of it, if Seth would stop reminding us that Ohio State gets to feast on them again this year. Clone Dax Hill.

4. Hot Takes & Special Teams

starts at 1:08:15

SLAP is our new punting stat and Michigan's punters are good at it. Percent returned is bad but we know why. Who's the punt returner? We want anyone but Ronnie Bell.

Having grown up in Michigan basketball with the post-Fisher, pre-Beilein era, hearing a Graham Brown reference makes me SO happy.  Just watching him die on the floor game in and game out for a team who did no better than the NIT was inspiring as a youth

In general I think the analysis on this blog is great.  I know I’m not the first person to say this, but you guys really need to re-evaluate your redshirt campaigning.

Look at what is going on across the sport- a free transfer rule is likely to pass this year.  Grad transfers are commonplace.  Fifth year contributors at major programs are the exception, not the rule. The idea that anyone good enough to play but not getting playing time is going to stick around for 5 years is wishful thinking.  We are better off trying to play all of the freshmen to see what we have and get more active in the transfer market to fill short term roster gaps.  I think you almost have to get guys playing time early just to keep them in programs these days.

Yes, there are some programs with low attrition this does not apply to.  Look at the transfer history under Harbaugh- we’re not one of them.

Why is this an issue to you right now? I think we mentioned it once this year. On Anthony Solomon. Who was downrated by the sites precisely because he doesn't project to be drafted by the NFL. When doing a podcast running down the entire roster.

There are no redshirts this year. The free transfer rule won't apply to redshirt decisions because the deadline for those will be long before a guy is redshirted. And under the current rules you can play a guy in any four games and preserve his redshirt. Which only means you have the option to play the guy one more year. It's an asset. We are for using assets wisely.

I don't get it. Did a redshirt murder your family or something?

I don’t think my post was harsh enough to evoke jokes about redshirts murdering a family member.

Yes, this year the first time I can remember where there wasn’t a ton of redshirt discussion in the preview.  It’s still an underlying theme and someone (usually Brian) is always saying things like “You’d like to get a redshirt on that guy” on recruiting reviews for recruits that seem less field ready.  I don’t take offense to your opinions, I’m saying this isn’t NCAA 2020 and guys don’t get an automatic +4 OVR when you slap a redshirt on them next year.

My opinion is that planning to get 5 years out of anyone decent is overwhelmingly now the exception and not the rule.  Do you have a rebuttal?

Was it just me or did it seem like the audio recorder was cutting off Seth a bunch? Wondering what was going on, but he was a little hard to understand this podcast (either this one or the previous).
