Exit George Johnson III Comment Count

The back end of the cornerback depth chart is taking another hit, as George Johnson III announced on Twitter that he’s entering the transfer portal.

That hype didn’t translate to playing time; Johnson got in four games and 18 snaps in 2021 via our message board’s counter. As mentioned in Green-Warren’s exit post, the CB depth chart started with Vincent Gray and Gemon Green atop it, and DJ Turner II played his way above both over the course of the season. Behind them Michigan was using 2021 freshman Ja’Den McBurrows (29 snaps) and walk-on Keshaun Harris (47) before Johnson and other scholarship options like Jalen Perry (20), Quinten Johnson (9), German Green (6), Andre Seldon (1), or fellow ATH/slot convert Eamonn Dennis (none).

With five-star Will Johnson expected to factor in immediately with the top rotation, and talented Tennesseans Kody Jones and Myles Pollard also entering the mix, the path to playing time for all these guys who couldn’t crack the rotation this season.

He will have three years of eligibility, and doesn’t appear to be graduating first.

FWIW, Touch the Banner had him fifth on the "way too early depth chart" post:

  1. D.J. Turner II (RS Jr.)
  2. Gemon Green (RS Sr.)
  3. Will Johnson (Fr.)
  4. Andre Seldon (RS So.)
  5. George Johnson III (RS Jr.)

Link to that post is here.

CB: D.J. Turner II (RS Jr.), Gemon Green (RS Sr.), Will Johnson (Fr.), Andre Seldon (RS So.), George Johnson III (RS Jr.)
CB: Vincent Gray (RS Sr.), Jalen Perry (RS Jr.), Ja'Den McBurrows (So.), Darion Green-Warren (RS So.), Eamonn Dennis (RS So.), Myles Pollard (Fr.)

He lists two positions for CB though... so that likely puts him at 9th/10th
