Gilbert and Gores may be teaming up to bring MLS team to Detroit
Some Twitter banter between Cavs owner/Quicken Loans owner/Detroit overlord Dan Gilbert and Pistons owner Tom Gores suggests (not-so-subtly) that the two are teaming up to bring an MLS team to Detroit. Any name suggestions?
I don't know what the current status is at the jail site but there was some scuttlebutt in the past that Gilbert wanted to put a soccer stadium there.
As a side note, the Detroit urban planner responsible for that may be the worst in the history of urban planners. "Hey, everybody, I've got an idea. You know piece of land that connects a growing/popular area of downtown with another growing/popular area in Eastern Market? Let's put a giant, scary looking jail there!"
I always thought "Fair City Football Club" would be a name that's both slightly tongue-in-cheek yet capturing the city's optimism. It's a phrase anyone with a sense of Detroit's checkered history immediately recognizes, having been deployed most noteably by our honorable Coleman Young back in the day. You'll often catch the phrase used today derisively by outsiders, but it could be reclaimed back to it's original positive meaning, akin to how President Angell used it back in 1901. It might be a little esoteric not having the "D" prominent in the name, but hey, something different...
Some "FC2" or "F.C.O.D." wearables would be pretty cool, in my opinion.
What about just calling the team "Detroit."
I don't want any stolen glory like "United" or "Real" etc.
Let's skip the whole battle over names and what is and isn't offensive to whom. Besides, all the good animals are taken and already have feelings associated with them. (Detroit Lions - Taken. Detroit Tigers - Taken. Detroit Bears - So very, very wrong.)
Detroit has an image as a tough, gritty no-frills city. I say all the teams needs is the name "Detroit,"
