OT: Jags fire Doug Marrone

Lots of talk about Jags targeting Urban Meyer. With the number 1 draft spot they’re in a great spot for a new coach to come in and make his mark.

I don't believe he coaches in the NFL ever.  He recognizes that he is only a winner where the playing field is heavily slanted in his direction.  The man has shown to be a huge coward.  This is way too much risk to his ego and his reputation.

I always smirk a little when people talk about Urban Meyer being successful because of talent advantages.  He was undefeated at Utah and won 22 games in 2 years there, did he have a talent advantage there?  Won 17 games in 2 seasons at Bowling Green.

Won 2 Nattys in his first 4 years at Florida, did he have a huge talent advantage over the SEC?

Dude is a winner, he's won big at all of his stops, no exceptions. Only at OSU did he amass a huge talent advantage over his regular competition.  But part of that talent advantage is also his ability to evaluate talent and not just recruiting rankings.  At all of his stops he's found lower ranked recruits that he got to play like 5 stars, and he's gotten the most out of his elite recruits more often than not too.

Going to the pros doesn't work out for a lot of college coaches, but Urban hasn't failed anywhere, I think he'll win in the NFL too.  It's not smoke and mirrors, he knows what he's doing.

I don't think Urban will be successful in the NFL, but anything that gets him away from OSU would be a welcomed change.  And, if he takes anyone with him like Marotti and/or LJ good for him.

I’d love to see him go to Jacksonville, and hopefully get to watch him fail.

I won’t dispute that Meyer has been one hell of a coach in college. His results reflect that. But much of that success has been predicated on him being one of the best recruiters in the business and him being able to out-talent almost everyone he plays.

He’s had NFL-caliber players at every level, at every position, that were able to make big plays that were able to bail him out if he was ever in a tight spot. But guess what? You go to the NFL, and everyone has got NFL talent. Your severe talent advantage effectively goes away. Parity in the league, in my opinion, has never been better than it is now.

Your recruiting acumen really means nothing in the NFL. It comes down to your acumen as an X’s and O’s guy, as well as dollars and cents. Can you pay me what I want? If not, nine times out of ten, I ain’t signing with you. I don’t care how good you are telling me what I want to hear.

As for him possibly poaching OSU staff, even if he does, I’ve seen this story before. OSU will just replace them with coaches that are somehow just as good, if not better than the guys they replaced. It’s the circle of life, I’m afraid.

I live in Jax, so I adopted the Jags as my second favorite team (the Lions being my #1, unfortunately). I really don't want to root for an Urban Meyer coached team, but I do like the idea of winning..

I have been reliably informed by insider Chernobyl that this week will be a big week. Or next week. One of these weeks. Coaches will sign. Others will leave. Some players may enter the transfer portal. That’s what my insider info says.

I think he will be fine as a CEO coach, which is what the NFL demands of most coaches. Let him work with the GM in identifying and selecting players, while having top-end assistants.

However, I do not think he will be long for the job.

I am just looking forward to the Vrabel/Urban handshake, however.
