More Covid problems for the NFL this morning

Submitted by mGrowOld on October 7th, 2020 at 9:38 AM

This morning it has been reported that two additional Titan players have tested positive meaning their practice facility remains shut down and putting this week's game against the Bills in serious doubt.

In addition to that bit of news it has also been announce that New England Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore has tested positive which has resulted in the Pats cancelling practice today.

And if that wasnt bad enough - check out who Stephon was hugging at the end of last Thursday's night game.  Yikes!

This plan is working really well. All the fucking money anyone could ask for poured into it and still failing. But yeah, let's re-open bars and movie theaters and play some more unnecessary sports and keep prolonging the misery for the not one-percenters.

Now someone please respond and tell me these healthy athletes aren't very affected by the virus, while entirely ignoring how many people they infect and how many people those people infect and how many people in that infection tree *are* seriously affected.

Yes, they are affected.

But keeping bars, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. closed long term is also going to prolong the misery for the not 1% because the unemployment rate would skyrocket (more than it is now) and businesses would fail left and right (more than they are now).  Our federal govt doesn’t have the ability to totally support 50 million people (food, housing etc.) without crashing the economy and setting off a global depression.  The 1% would likely survive that, meanwhile tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions, of middle class and lower middle class Americans would be plunged into abject poverty.

the whole “keep everything locked down to keep everyone safe and beat the virus” never was the plan, never will be the plan, because it isn’t remotely feasible

What part of "the plan" didn't work?  They're testing players daily.  The thing is, the virus spreads.  It just does, even with the best of intentions. Zero cases isn't very likely.

Some rough back-of-the-envelope math:

(1) There are roughly 40K cases daily in America.

(2) Which is 280K cases weekly.

(3) Divided by 327MM, that means a random American has a 0.085% chance of being a confirmed positive in a week.

(4) The NFL tests roughly 2400 people (75 people per team * 32 teams) per week.

(5) The likelihood of ALL 2400 of them NOT testing positive in a given week is (1-0.085%)^2400 = 12.8%.

Net, we shouldn't be surprised by the NFL reporting some positive cases.  If anything, the NFL players and teams have over-achieved to this point.  I'd argue they are doing a BETTER than expected job.

The real question should be this: should we be cancelling games completely just because of one or two positive tests?

I understand how viruses spread.

Quarantine and sit out those who test positive.  Continue to encourage social distancing among all NFL personnel.

But why exactly can't we play the game with those who don't test positive?

When we don't play a game in those circumstances, that is a "zero tolerance policy."  Which is unsustainable.  But a "zero tolerance policy" isn't sustainable in the long-run.  It simply isn't.

Actually, I don't think you do. Let's say one guy tests positive. He's been in meetings with his position group, sharing close contact, breathing on them. How many of them are going to test positive? That's why smart people, who study this stuff, recommend that if you come in close contact with a Covid-positive person you self-quarantine for 14 days, because there's a delay in onset of symptoms and when you test positive.

P.S. It's getting tiresome seeing you set up that "zero tolerance" straw man to repeatedly strike down. The issue is more complicated than that.

It's not a "strawman."  If we are shutting things down because there are any non-zero amount of cases, that is the definition of "zero tolerance."

If people want to advocate for such a policy, that's fine

But I desire honesty in terms of how we name such a policy.  It IS a "zero tolerance" policy.

I think it was the Pats Gilmore who was upset back in August that he was seeing social media posts by other guys across the league hanging out at clubs and parties and not being safe regarding Covid. If so, that is really unfortunate he contracted it.

The year the Titans may actually be a legit threat and this happens. They were just about to get some of their best players back from injuries too.

Brutal.

I caught part of a game this weekend and was pretty shocked at what I was seeing.  Players getting up in each other’s faces and screaming.  People on the sideline with no masks shoulder to shoulder.  Be smart people!  Jawing in someone’s face is taking a risk that the next game might be cancelled... or worse yet that a player catches COVID and unwittingly passers it on to a vulnerable relative.  It’s not business as usual.
