Thanks for preparing. I wonder how Dom Brown's pre-Michigan teams do in this regard?
Are holds more likely to be called with:

Gentry will start at QB, throw for 300 yards, scramble in a for a game-saving touchdown, take J.T. Barrett's mother Stacy Barrett out for a nice seafood dinner, and never call her again.

Fair enough, but I don't think 4-8 says much, especially when those 4 wins came against opponents having off-years.
|10/09/2017 - 1:54pm||This is worth a look, but I||
This is worth a look, but I don't think the O'Neill record is that significant.
From 2011 through 2016, Michigan's record vs. The Triad of Shittiness (OSU, MSU and Iowa) is 4-12. Michigan is 0-4 in those games where O'Neill was officiating.
Small sample size aside, Michigan has recently fared poorly against these teams regardless of who officiated.

Purdue, you just got O'Korn Holed!
|09/04/2017 - 1:08pm||Thanks.||
Thanks for the insight, everyone. It makes sense that establishing a solid, "traditional" running game will improve Michigan's chances to hold scores late in games. If nothing else, it was a good sign that Florida's defense looked pretty gassed by the end of the game.
|09/04/2017 - 1:01pm||That's a very good point. In||
That's a very good point. In all five of those losses, Michigan had the lead at some point during the fourth quarter (although Michigan did not really have a chance to manage the clock against FSU).

Fair point, but hopefully that trend won't continue against better offenses.
And I'm 47 and my heart could use a little less strain.
|09/02/2017 - 7:32pm||Weak 4th quarter offense||
Since the Harbaugh Era began, Michigan has had twelve games decided by less than 14 points. In those games Michigan is 7-5.
In the fourth quarters of those games, Michigan outscored their opponents by just 74-69.
Michigan averaged just over 6 points in the fourth quarter of each of those games, and scored more than 10 points in the fourth quarter of just one of those games - last year's bowl game.
Maybe the sample size is too small, and it would help to run some comps here with other teams, but that seems pretty anemic to me. Should Harbaugh push the "regular" tempo later into the fourth quarter?

|07/11/2017 - 11:56am||Drupal was RuPaul's seemingly||
Drupal was RuPaul's seemingly slow-witted, country-born, identical cousin, as played by RuPaul, in the late 90's WB sitcom "Lady and Genteman." Typically, RuPaul would fret over Drupal's seeming obliviousness when dealing with life in the big city, but in the end, Drupal would come through to save the day with some down-home country wisdom.
The character created some controversy when asked to present at the 1999 CMA Awards. Apparently the CMA was late to discover that the actor playing Drupal - identified as "Andy Charles" on the show - was in fact RuPaul. Despite concerns over losing advertising, the CMA decided to include Drupal after a show of support from Vince Gill, Shania Twain and Jeff Foxworthy.

Has there been any previous analysis of Michigan's defense when in slowdown mode? I feel like it has happened before where the other team becomes super-efficient in that situation, but my memory sucks.

Every time I hear about some kid's mom wanting her son to commit to Michigan, it does not seem to happen.
|11/26/2016 - 6:01pm||Harbaugh is a great coach,||
Harbaugh is a great coach, but if he's going to get as emotional as he does over every bad call, he will need to do a better job of putting teams away. The refs are reacting to Harbaugh's antics. That's not right, but it's the way it is, and it matters in close games.

Ferentz thoroughly outcoached Harbaugh tonight.
|04/09/2016 - 11:24am||Let me clarify. Ryan WAS the||
Let me clarify. Ryan WAS the exception given his ridiculous strikeout rate. Most other pitchers did not throw nearly as hard back then. In good old 1975, the average strikeout rate per nine innings was 5.0; in 2015 it was 7.8. I know there are a lot of variables here, but there is a strong correlation between fastball speed and strikeout rate.
Don't get me wrong; I don't think throwing harder means pitching better. And I also think the pitch count focus can go too far. But if teams are going to push their pitchers to throw harder, than extra attention to fatigue - especially with younger pitchers - makes sense.
Or we could just make it easier for everyone to obtain steroids again, which can really help with muscle recovery.
|04/09/2016 - 7:29am||Old-school pitchers used to||
Old-school pitchers used to pitch more, but they also did not pitch as well. They could not throw the ball as hard consistently, which is in part why their strikeout totals were much lower than they are now (the other part is hitters becoming more selective and hitting for power rather than contact).
Nolan Ryan is the exception that proves the rule. And he was also a reliever for the early part of his major league career, so his initial pitch counts were actually pretty low.

1. The 1997 OSU game and its aftermath. I rank this #1 even though some drunken bastard fell from the tree outside the President's house and landed about 20 feet from me. As I recall, he was saved by a combination of (a) his inebriation, (b) quick-thinking students placing mattresses at the base of the tree, and (c) his hitting every branch on the way down.
