They usually carry another 4 or 5 kids on IR or Designated for Assignment at each level.  The average organization carries about 165 players.  The actual number that will eventually play in the majors is almost exactly 10% or 16-17 per organization.  There was a great program on MLB Network called "The Ten Percent."  It aired last year and focused on the SF Giants organization.  It is a must see for anyone who doesn't appreciate the time, effort and skill involved in becoming a major league ballplayer.

Runyan would have been the starter last year over Ulizio if not for a high ankle sprain late in camp that bothered him all year. Don't sleep on the young man.

Had dinner with Big Jon Runyan and Jr. last Saturday night in Flint.  Jr. played the entire year with a high ankle sprain suffered in camp and aggrevated during the season.

Wondering how getting bumped by a camera can tear a meniscus?  Doesn't a meniscus tear require a twist?

10/10/2017 - 5:17pm Why hasn't Bredeson been

Why hasn't Bredeson been tried at OT?  He was recruited as one.  I am trying to understand why moving him outside and replacing him with Runyan (who has done well in limited snaps) isn't worth trying?  Any non-armchair experts on OT play who can explain why Bredeson isn't an option to play OT?

09/19/2017 - 1:30pm Congrats!

Reminds me of the time when I turned down several D3 baseball opportunities to try to walk on at Michigan.  So happens that was same year Larkin, Kamieniecki, Watters, Close, etc. came aboard and Sabo, Morris, Paciorek, etc. were Sophomores.  Middaugh gave me a choice of bullpen catcher with very little hope of seeing the field or student manager.  I chose option 3, school.  A wise choice. Glory days.

While the water problem has been fixed, the health issues will linger for many, many years.

08/06/2017 - 2:11pm Laughable. Babe Ruth was an

Laughable. Babe Ruth was an incredible athlete in his youth. He was an all-star pitcher for the Red Sox before the Yankees turned him into an outfielder to get him on the field every day.  People tend to judge him on the video footage from his last couple of years with the Braves when drinking and cancer diminished his skills considerably.  He was only a shadow of himself at that time. Then, there was the day he set foot on a football field for the first time ever and simply made plays:  http://articles.latimes.com/1990-09-21/sports/sp-523_1_day-babe-ruth

08/06/2017 - 10:11am The game has changed

The game has changed considerably.  There are still a few specialists hanging around, e.g., designated hitters and pitchers who may lack speed or be a bit overweight; however, the vast majority of professional baseball players have outstanding strength and conditioning.  I talk to the Class A kids in Florida as well as the management and staff for the Tigers, Twins and Red Sox.  The kids are all top athletes in high school who chose baseball over other sports.  The programs in place to build top-notch ballplayers are as impressive if not moreso than what I have seen in football and basketball.  If you ever get a chance to see the MLB Channel's program on the San Francisco Giant's strength and conditioning program, it will blow you away.  I believe it is called, "The Ten Percent" as only 1 of ten minor leaguers ever make it to the show.

BTW, 53 years old and still play competitive baseball with and against many former MLB, MiLB, college baseball and college and NFL football players.  The football players aren't marvel athletes on a baseball field.  They are mostly just strong.

Hitting a baseball is incredibly difficult and requires hand-eye coordination far beyond that required in any other sport.

08/02/2017 - 8:21pm Per the many body shop owners

Per the many body shop owners I work with Progressive and Geico have the tightest reimbursement policies forcing repairs with non-OEM parts and cut corners.  It makes it difficult to properly repair your vehicle.  Their vehicle owners return with the highest percentage of complaints.  They also obviously have very large marketing budgets, so I suppose that is where your premiums go.

04/18/2017 - 9:21pm Why?

I probably purchased a couple of cruise missiles today.

Our tax system sucks.  Our tax dollars are mostly wasted.  But, opportunity to earn more, give more, and watch more wasted abounds.

God Bless the USA!

04/02/2017 - 10:42am OK?

Show me one QB that performs better against good teams than he does against poor teams?  I'm not sure these stats mean a whole lot especially when the kid played hurt against the last three good teams (half of the games against good teams).  I expect improvement especially in his ability to read defenses, check into the right plays, limit mistakes and lead.  It may not show up in the stats though due to his having less experienced players around him.  He is very solid.  I am looking forward to seeing him play.

While I will never overtly root for Sparty, I will admit I have felt a slight bit of joy for my Spartan friends when they win.

And that is why I have purged my Spartan friends.  Now I no longer have that problem.

Fort Myers-Naples area has sent quite a few kids to the NFL - Sammy Watkins, Carlos Hyde, Jeff Heuerman, Jaylin Watkins, Tre Boston, Aaron Lynch, etc..  Naples High has a very good program.  It is a good pull to get a kid out of Naples High as there has been a strong OSU presence there.

I was coached by my father in baseball.  His advice was, "If you want me to put you on the field, you can't be just as good as they guy you are competing to start.  Because of who you are, you need to be clearly better."  It took a little while to sink in, but I've lived that advice and it has served me very well on and off the field.

01/03/2017 - 2:23pm Dallas is fun

Getting punched in the dong by Eric Nystrom after telling him our last touchdown against Alabama was too little too late was not so much fun.  While still questioning the entire experience, he yelled, "don't you ever give up!"  I have taken that to heart.  Thanks Eric.

Well Jalen, Florida wasn't really that good or well coached.  You'll have had plenty of time to fix that.  See y'all in September.

12/16/2016 - 8:19am OSU success is a bit

OSU success is a bit over-hyped.  Consistently good and the NC in 2014, of course, but only one BIG Championship in the past 7 seasons -- not exactly dominance.

After watching a man with shaved legs, ridulously short shorts, striped knee sox, pumps he could not walk in, a dozen necklaces, big loopy earrings, long hair dyed pink and five o'clock shadow walk into the ladies room at a Panera Bread in Port Charlotte, FL yesterday I feel very safe in saying it is not bigoted to say that guy doesn't belong in the ladies room with my wife, daughters or anyone else for that matter. It is a free country and you can dress up however you wish, but where do you draw the line? Erasing all lines for <1% of the population makes little sense.

04/26/2016 - 7:24am I was there too.  6-4 Tigers.

I was there too.  6-4 Tigers.  Sat just outside the right feild foul pole.  There were two other memorable moments in that game.  Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson arguing in the Yankees dugout and and a loudmouth drunk sitting about five rows above us getting hit in the head by a foul ball, sliding about five steps down the aisle dazed, and the whole section erupting into a big cheer.  My introduction to karma.

This would be an interesting ruling as SMSB is within our 50 miles radius, but outside Sparty's and OSU's.  D'Antoni would attend SMSB, but would Urbs give up his opportunity to troll Michigan for more productive OSU recruiting areas?

02/25/2016 - 9:49am I played in two State

I played in two State Championship games, but my most memorable game was playing Clio in the finals of the Greater Flint High School Baseball Tournament my Senior year.  It was the bottom of the sixth, two out and bases were loaded.  We trailed by one run.  I hit a gound ball up the middle I thought was a sure base hit.  The eighteenth or nineteenth Doyle brother from Clio (it seemed like there was an endless supply) came flying across the field from short, barehanded the ball, and in one motion threw a perfect strike to first base nipping me by a few inches.  We ended up losing 4-3.

Why is this the most memorable?  Because the mutha f'n Channel 12 news team kicked off their sports coverage with that highlight for about six years.  Every time I watched it, I swear that kid was possessed because the play was superhuman.

11/19/2015 - 12:33pm Vance Bedford has strong ties

Vance Bedford has strong ties to Michigan and coached with Durkin and Mattison at Florida.  Seems a likely the Michigan staff steered him to Texas who can accomodate his early enrollment.  Seems like the kid is landing on his feet and wouldn't surprise me if our staff assisted.  So enough of the conjecture.
