UM Cycling @ 2023 Road Nationals - 10th overall
2023 Road Cycling Nationals were held this weekend in Albuquerque. The time trials (TT) were held this past weekend on Friday, the road race on Saturday and the crits on Sunday.
Cycling is a club sport at Michigan. I was unaware of the club when I was a student, but they've been around at least since the late 90s and probably well before that.
For those that don't know:
- The time trial is a race against the clock. There's an individual TT (ITT) and a team TT (TTT). Everyone rides the same course and the best time wins.
- The road race is what it sounds like. The course is in the Sandias east of Albuquerque.
- The criterium is a timed race. Racers complete a ~1 mile circuit as many times as they can in about 70 minutes. First to cross the line wins.
Interestingly, they put cat 1-5 together (1 is top, 5 is newbie) for all the races.
Team Omnium: 10th overall.
Women:
- Sarah Duclos (cat 3) finished 2nd overall after taking 5th in the road race (2nd cat 3) and 3rd in the crit (1st cat 3).
- Elizabeth Callison (cat 3) finished 17th overall after taking 13th in the road race (4th cat 3) and 17th (4th cat 3) in the crit.
Men:
- Bryce Natter (cat 2) finished 46th overall after taking 64th in the road race (14th cat 2) and 34th in the crit (9th cat 2).
Congratulations to Sarah, Elizabeth and Bryce for making nationals and for their individual results!
Lance Armstrong is missing a testicle and was a blood doper. Thus ends my knowledge of competitive cycling...
how is any of that relevant? besides, way to show support for these student athletes who:
- are not lance armstrong, not even related, prob'ly don't even know lance armstrong
- are probably not missing gonads
- are not blood dopers
plus:
- pay their own way
- compete for the love of the sport
- represent the university in a positive way.
you could learn something if you cared, or you can just be a shitty diaper.
Thanks for the post. Lots of cyclists out in the world. Club sports are fun!
Seems like a solid result. I have a couple of Michigan kits from the team in past years. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Me too - happy to wear it in Pennsylvania.
Don’t forget theTEAM the TEAM the TEAM (tTtTtT)
Very cool - go get em! It would be awesome if the NCAA had some way to honor or recognize these types of sports. Go Blue!
The road up the Sandlas would be no fun to pedal my fat ass up.
Bring plenty of water. The descent is magical.
How many other teams can rival Michigan's idyllic training conditions -- low altitude, flat terrain, and long, cold winters? Maybe U of Chicago and Purdue?
I have some stories about cycling in Chicago's South Side - not too far from Hyde Park - the home of the U-Chicago.
Good for them! A lot of those club sports kids work their tails off and rarely get the recognition for their hard work.
Kellen Caldwell is from Michigan and won the varsity race as a Sophmore. But races for a Fort Lewis College.
