PSA: Status of Michigan's Public Universities

Submitted by Built Ford Tough on March 11th, 2020 at 6:31 PM

Since some individual university cancellations were posted, but not all of them, I thought I would post a source I've been using for the latest updates. This site: https://www.masu.org/news/health-safety/03-11-2020/operational-status-michigan-public-universities-response-covid-19 has the latest status of all 15 public universities in the state. As of 6:00pm, all but three public universities have moved to some sort of online course status, with various end dates. I hope the board finds this helpful. Stay safe out there.

Would it make sense to empty the dorms to avoid spreading the virus? It probably be safer it most of the students went home since it reduces risk of close contacts.

I'm a professor at MSU. This evening as I left campus I saw lots of parents at the dorms moving their kids out. Staff had gloves. Very weird and disturbing scene. The U expects that most undergrads will leave campus by the end of the weekend.

However, MSU, like other schools, has significant numbers of international undergrads, including Chinese students. These students can not get back to China now, or at least not easily. Further, they probably wouldn't be able to return. The dorms have to remain available for these students. MSU plans to have dorms available for non-graduating international students through the summer so that they can complete their education. I suspect Michigan is making similar arrangements.

Off-campus undergrads are another matter. Lots of parties going on in East Lansing. I assume they may stick around for a while longer, maybe even through the semester.

I'm in NYC & a student at Hunter College (part of CUNY)

Today the Governor announced that all SUNY & CUNY (State University NY & City University NY) beginning tomorrow are on a five-day "instructional recess" to prepare for a shift to "distance-learning mode" for the rest of the semester which continues 3/19.

No idea what this will mean for my class, as it is research & presentation based, with an instructor who is not the best with the internet.
