OT: "Useful" Drupal Modules

Submitted by stubob on

Saw this come up on slashdot, thought it would be a good way for Brian/The Mods to deal with the trolls.

Level 1: The Cave. Put trolls in the box, so they can see everyone and respond, but their comments aren't actually published, so no one sees them. Give them the silent treatment.

Level 2: Misery. Active aggravation. Cause 403, 404 errors, fail form submit, random blank pages, randomly go to the wrong node. My favorite: crash IE6.

If I'm not mistaken, they actually use both of them already.  Caving people has resulted in funny threads where the user is caved, but some responses to his comment that were submitted prior to the guy being caved are still around.

If the maintainer of the SlashComments module is open to feature enhancements, I don't think other modules are necessary - besides a link to the user points.  Once people have a chance to mess around with the current implementation it would probably be good to solicit feedback.  A few ideas:

- fewer moderation options (although flamebaiting is pretty funny, it's not really necessary)

- ability to moderate after commenting (except on your own comments, if possible)

- CSS tweaking to put Score to the left of the comment's subject line.

Edit: the 2nd point may be fixed already.

The second point is fixed, and I actually do like the difference between "trolling" and "flamebaiting". Let's say we're talking Title IX and someone says something baiting and political but itsn't speaking like "Tre$$el and the NC$$ are kulaboraitng to let O$U win the Ro$e Bowl". I think flamebaiting is a worse offense.

Also, I think it would be useful to see the moderating be an option on an individual post, so that you could click on voting details before reading a post and see if everyone thinks it's flamebaiting or interesting or informative. It would also give good feedback for people who write threads/diaries.

Other than that, I agree that just given time better solutions will emerge or we'll grow to love the new system, the truth is probably somewhere between those two.
