OT: McGregor vs. Dos Anjos Canceled! EDIT

Submitted by Anonymous Coward (not verified) on

Apparently RDA broke his foot in training a day or two ago and has removed himself from UFC 196 and his highly anticipated bout with Conor Mcgregor.  This matchup will still happen sometime this year, but Dos Anjos will need an additoinal 6 weeks to recover.

McGregor was attempting to become the first fighter ever to hold two belts in more than one weight class at the same time.

A replacement opponent for McGregor has not ben announced, but there is a short list that includes Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone. A rematch with Aldo is very unlikely.

As a fan of the UFC and trash talking fighters I would love to see Conor fight Diaz. The buildup to the fight and the press conferences would be wildly entertaining.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Dana White recently announced that Mcgregor will move up to welterweight(170) to fight Nate Diaz! McGregor beat Jose Aldo at 145.

Conor is a diverse striker, similar to a guy like Ceronne or Johnson.  Cerrone is a little more upright and Conor takes a lower karate style approach in his strikes.  Johnson is also pretty unpredictable.  Maynard is more a powerful one punch guy like Mendes.  Melvin Guillard is a very diverse striker and very explosive.  IMO he's a better striker, or at least was a few years back, but is a bit of a head case so his record never matched his ability.  They are all different strikers in their own way so it's hard to say one is better than another.

Mendes proved an explosive guy that can close distance with his hands can knock Conor down.  He didn't have the gas to finish becasue he took the fight on short notice.  I figured Aldo would do the same, but he was obviously KOd.  Only time will tell if that was a fluke or not.  It was too short of a fight to know.  I'm sure there will be a rematch at some point with both guys.

I agree that Conor is a better fight than Diaz and Diaz' best chance to win is on the ground, but I'd be really surprised if he takes the fight there by design.  My hunch is Conor wins a decision by avoiding boxing and by kicking and only engaging when he first does damage with his feet.  But, Diaz is pretty durable and hard to finish.  I agree Conor is annoying, and can't wait to see him humbled!  Than again so is Diaz, but at least he has lost before.
