M Lacrosse @ Hofstra 11 AM

Men's lacrosse is on Long Island today to take on the Hofstra Pride (forever the Flying Dutchmen in our hearts).  Michigan is coming off a comfortable stress-free 16-9 win over Cleveland State in their season opener last Saturday. Hofstra is also 1-0, having blown out Wagner 21-11 last week.

Good news for Michigan: they won faceoffs at a nearly 2-to-1 clip last week, beating Cleveland State 18-10. They'll need to continue that success to be competitive this year.

GO BLUE!

Thanks for the reminder.  Kid’s in archery class, now I’ve got something to watch while the other kids shoot.  Nice underhand crank by the Fr Middie Zowada from NC from about 12 yds to even it at 3.  His 4th on the young season

Hofstra is something of a mecca for Long Island lacrosse (and for high school football). Hofstra Stadium has hosted almost every high school football and lacrosse championship (and tons of late round playoff games) for decades.  Every player on the team from LI has probably played at least one game on that field and likely have been attendance for dozens of others.

It's also simultaneously the coldest and hottest stadium I've ever been in. It's a bitter cold wind tunnel until May at which point it turns into an Astroturf oven.

Hostra has also produced some great All-Americans over the years and for a long time it was Transfer U for LI guys who got kicked out of places like Hopkins or UVA hah.

Knotted up at 6 at halftime.  M had a 6-4 lead late.  Hofstra goalie stoned our attackman coming across the crease 1on1.  Could’ve been 7-4 under 2:00 in half at that point.  Not sure what stats are on faceoffs, but it’s critical that we keep those guys healthy and win at the X.

9-7 after 3, that 3rd quarter got a little sloppy both ways. But since Michigan went 6-3 early in the 2nd, they've been outscored 6-1. A lot of little things - botched clears, unforced turnovers, not backing up shots - are building up. They gotta clean those up in the 4th. This is a game they can win!  GO GET 'EM BOYS.

Costly unforced error by middies at top of the box down 9-12 with 2:30 to go killed any chance of a comeback.   M Lax had just scored on their previous 2 possessions to cut Into a 5 goal Hofstra lead late.

Watching the tape of this one is going to painful. Michigan started out playing well getting to a 6-3 lead. But they went on a long scoring drought in the middle third of the game and Hofstra outplayed them from that point onwards.

Key stats: 7 failed clears, most of them during that scoring drought in which they desperately needed to stop the bleeding.

0-6 on man-up (including at least one 2-man up penalty).

At least 4 shots that were not backed up that led to Hofstra ball, basically turnovers.

I'll have to check the box score for the turnovers but there seemed to be a lot, including two bad passes late in the game that would've led to scoring situations. They also had two point-blank shots that they didn't finish (Hofstra's goalie made great saves on them but still).

The good news is: this might end up being a good loss on paper because Hofstra seemed pretty good and will probably beat some teams this year. And a lot of these are fixable mistakes and its still early in the season. But the margin for error just got a lot thinner. They have to take care of business the next few weeks and win the next 3 before spring break. GO BLUE!!
