At Least We Beat One BCS Caliber Team right?

Submitted by FL_Steve on

With UConn going to the Fiesta Bowl to take on Oklahoma, our resume might be looking a little stronger after all.

But I digress,

Hey descent match up against an other SEC team, much better than playing Mizzo in my opinion. New Years day bowl, the last one went over well. Added recruiting, hopefully Dee Hart will be on the sideline for this one (I believe he could travel with the team right, if he enrolls early? Maybe not since classes would not have started yet? Either way hopefully he will be there). Also 8-0 against Non-conference opponent last two years, lets keep the steak alive, also one last time for Denard to go dilithium this year and pad some stats.

And lets not forget about the seniors, and all the players going their first bowl game!

Because as I recall and correct me if I'm wrong but Kevin Grady actually practiced with the team when we played in the Rose Bowl when he enrolled early no?

So we played 3 BCS teams, beat one of them, and faced an 11-1 team that didn't make the BCS.  I think the only other team that faced that many upper level teams was Oregon State (Stanford, Oregon, TCU, and Boise State), and they ended 5-7.

The Big East sucks. Last year Pitt, Cincy, WVU, and UConn (I think? maybe one other?) were ranked. Then they got absolutely bombed in their bowl games, and people realized the Big East isn't some amazing conference. Then they sucked a fat egg out of conference this year, and people realized they're just above MWC levels of competition. They suck. UConn's pretty bad. They're a completely one dimensional team, they're small, and they have a very dull offense. Expect them to get blown up by who they play. We should not be pointing to that win as a marquee win.

If UConn lights it up, I'll eat my foot. But I doubt I'll have to.

Yea tell me about it. I spent the last two years there and he could never perform at the level his talent was at.Nineteen wins in two years isn't anything to laugh at, but the talent level at Pitt is on a whole other level than the rest of the Big East and he didn't show that when it mattered.

They deserved to be consensus preseason top fifteen, and deserved to finish the year unranked and headed to the BBVA Compass Bowl. Ugh.

The best case for a playoff system, based on rankings, not conferences, is the fact that Connecticut gets a BCS bowl invite.  The BCS has reached new lows.

UConn has come a long way this past decade.  But they're still in the Big East...which is downright awful.  Despite this, in our game against UConn, the score could have been much closer.  Our secondary left their receivers wide open almost all game but UConn's quarterback kept overthrowing them.  They also lost a fumble at the 2 yard line while trying to go in for a score which changed the tone of that game.

This game against Oklahoma is going to get really ugly. It will be like Cincinnati's game in the Sugar Bowl last year, Illinois in the Rose Bowl in 07 and all those times Notre Dame went to BCS bowls despite not beating any noteworthy teams.  This will be over by the end of the first quarter.

West Virginia should have beaten UConn and really deserved to be in the BCS. All of their  losses were by less than a TD including 20-14 at LSU. Makes me wonder if they go undefeated with Rich Rod in charge.

......UConn is BCS caliber, considering some of the teams left out of it, particularly in the B12, but they aren't all that bad either. Yes, they lost to Rutgers and Louisville(both away games) but they beat all the rest of the top BE teams, including @SouthFlorida, who just beat Miami the week before.

Disclaimer:Do not take this post, in any way, shape, or form, to mean that I believe the BE conference is any good overall. The top teams are ok, not very good, and certainly not great, but they aren't all that bad either.

"BCS caliber" ordinarily has a certain connotation, but in this case it doesn't mean a whole lot. It normally means that you happen to be of the best teams in college football. But in UConn's case, it just means they were awarded a BCS bid over several superior teams due to the bowls selection rules. So while UConn is technically a "BCS Caliber", it's disingenuous to pretend like the ordinary meaning applies.

<br>It's sort of like Sparty running around bragging about being "Big Ten Champions". While technically a true statement, a phrase that ordinarily means "better than everyone in the conference" means "third best in the conference" in this case. Sparty likes to pretend the ordinary meaning applies, when in fact they wouldn't even be invited to the conference championship game had there been one this year.

You are completely, 100% incorrect.

The three co-champions are Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State.

MSU beat Wisconsin, Wisconsin lost to MSU and beat Ohio State, and Ohio State didn't beat any of the co-champions. On the field, MSU won the right to call itself "Big Ten Champion."

Also, I don't think you understand how divisions work. You claim that "they wouldn't even be invited to the conference championship had there been one this year." This is incorrect as MSU would've been the Big Ten Championship Game representative of the UM, MSU, Minn, NU, Iowa division, while Wisconsin would've been the representative of the other division. Ohio State would've been the team left out, not Michigan State.
