Hurricanes Dismiss Player to Make Room for Henderson
A few months back, Miami signed safety Latwan Anderson to a track scholarship because they had no football scholarships left to offer this year. When Seantrel Henderson decided to transfer to Miami a few weeks ago, where was his scholarship going to come from? It now appears we have our answer. The Hurricanes dismissed a fifth-year senior defensive end from the team, conveniently freeing up a scholarship for Mr. Henderson.

Sucks for the guy, but a LOT of 5th years don't get scholarships. Even the Coner didn't.
I agree it sucks, but this guy played in the spring game. He was on track to play this year and expecting to receive a scholarship. It wasn't until the big man from Minnesota decided to transfer there that the coaches pulled the rug out from under his feet.
That's okay, I hear the Coner is on scholarship at the music school now.
Nick Saban's School of Ethics is rapidly spreading in the South, it seems...
In 1993, Brian Griese committed to us when we had no scholarships remaining. Gary Moeller promised him one as soon as one became available. As it happened, one came open that fall.
I don't have a problem with taking one extra guy. What Alabama is doing (signing 10+ extra guys) is another story.
One could argue that, but only the University of Miami Atheltics Dept knows for sure.
Edit: You would hope that Henderson was not the reason he lost his scholarship, but unless Miami releases a press statement that is more fact filled. It is pure speculation by the fandom of other colleges.
I am always a bit surprised when you see a post like this relating to ethics and recruiting. Come on, this is the U? Do you know the history of this school?
" In the 2010 UM media guide, Wesley said said he chose Miami because he ``wanted to be part of such great tradition and it's been a dream come true.'
-- Miami Herald
your dream just became a nightmare, thats too bad big time athletics has become so competetive and coaching has become so lucrative that coaches and administrators would/could just toss the guy out at this stage of the game. If he were to be let go there should have been ample time for him to apply for the NFL.
that's a misleading title and the same sort of jumping to conclusions misery that UM fans complain about lately
Difference being, marlon doesn't claim to be a "journalist".
Kind've ironic that by taking a dig at his title you reinforce that the "journalists" UM fans have been complaining about lately have the same integrity/ethics/etc. as a random posted on MGoBlog. Just sayin....
this isn't about journalism but taking shortcuts to alluded to or vaguely possible ideas. where people take a quote out of context and it breeds ignorance moving forward. there's a post about that on the board today.
I highly doubt the OP was trying to provide information as much as he was giving his opinion/speculation on the topic of dismissing marginal players w/ eligibility to make room for star players. It's been a frequent topic here so him adding his two cents doesn't really break any pretend rules about breeding ignorance. He wasn't trying to educate anyone.
I personally think that you should get a guaranteed 4 years if you get an athletic scholarship. It allows you a reasonable period of time to earn a degree without causing major roster issues. That said, it was rather unfair to pull the scholarship this close to football season just because they got a late commitment.*
*This assumes that he was kicked off the team to make room on the roster, as opposed to being kicked off for other reasons.
That is shady - no doubt. But it's not isolated to Miami by any means.
This doesn't make it right, but to play devil's advocate:
Remember when we were looking at a bunch of possible signees (Sean Taylor, Dorsey, kid who went to Rutgers, etc.) and people were saying "OMG THERE WON'T BE ENOUGH SCHOLARSHIPS" - there was some talk about how to get around that.
Miami got this kid real late in the game, so they didn't have all the "tools" at their disposal around signing day.
But that isn;t the way mich does business. If you don;t have a spot for a guy, sorry, you don't take him.
Why I laugh about this post is this is the U baby! Am I too old or does anyone remember the Jimmie Johnson era.....Miami baby! This is how we roll, dog! Am I the only one who remembers this...I mean athletes don;t really go their to ...study...let's say. They want to live the high life in downtown miami and gett ready for the NFL!
Dude the ; key and the ' key are not the same key.
Also, that was the 80's. Everyone was snorting blow.... YO!
And ESPN made a 30 for 30 doc about it.
I hope you were not serious about any of this.
The U is the U...you don;t go there to study....anyone knows this. That is why I found this post funny, as if Miami is a school of academic and moral excellence
academic excellence is very important to you
I am a bit biased when it comes to academic excellence. I saw that Mich's buisness program was rated in the top 5. I struggle with this, when I tell people I am a mich fan because I love excellence both on the field and in the classroom, they say I am elitist. Should I apologize for wanting it all?
But that isn;t the way mich does business. If you don;t have a spot for a guy, sorry, you don't take him
Brian Griese disagrees.
is pure speculation, so your post is invalid
No it isn't. Please stop posting.
Sean Parker, wasn't it?
/pedant
Yeah my bad - RIP Sean Taylor.
Tough to say that the two are related. That kid was going to get real PT. Wasn't like they got rid of a bench warmer.
but i bet theres less than 10 FBS schools that wouldnt do the same thing in that situation
