Gotta Love Tate

Submitted by drewro02 on

Sorry if anyone else has already talked about this, but I looked for it, and I've been pretty heavy into the jager scene this weekend. I just got done watching the Tate interview on the main page, and I couldn't b happier for him. I'm proud to have him on our team, and whether he's our first or third string qb, I feel like he can win games for Michigan. That interview makes it seem like coach Rod has everyone doing all they can to win for Michigan. Go Blue Gentlemen!

Denard is so humble and such a team guy, it makes it easier for DG and TF to accept their support roles.  Tate has always been polished with the media, but after the Bowling Green game, he came off as more genuine and transparent than he was last year.  Chalk it up to a sign of maturity.  Way to go Tate!

Agree.  I said the same under the post game presser and got neg'd for whatever reason, but I don't care.  It was good to see him play, do well, and gain confidence for if/when he has to do the same thing in a conference game.

Watching iis excitement is great.  I think he does believe that "It's Great to be a Michigan Wolverine!"  Really looked and sounded like he understands there will be more days like these.

Very classy and supportive on his part, redeeming himself for looking like an idiot arguing with RR during the first game. You can tell he's had a complete attitude change. Good for him and the team.

and made some sweet plays with his feet and especially his arm, albeit against a subpar opponent. I, along with many of you root for this kid because he gave everything he had to try and win games for Big Blue last year. It's unfortunate for Tate that Denard is all-world, because the kid has a lot to offer as a QB. But so does Devin for that matter, and it's been a while since I felt comfortable with any one of three QB's stepping on the field and leading this team. Go Blue!!

I'm not going to lie. When I was at the game, I was a little skeptical when Tate first went in. I was thinking that DG was going to keep playing for a little while longer then Tate was going to come in later. But I am happy he came in a that point and cheered right along with everyone else. I love our QB situation and know that either of the three can lead us any day. GO BLUE!

It seems to me that Tate is the true second string qb on the team at this point. A quote from RR:

"Tate has showed he can play. We wouldn't be playing Devin if we didn't think he was ready. Is he as ready as Denard or Tate? Maybe not yet because he's just a first-year player."

I get the impression that this staff wanted 3 qbs ready to go and has been playing Devin more only because they know Tate's ready anyway (and maybe because Tate had to pay his dues a bit).  If they're in a close game and Denard goes down, my money is on Tate getting the nod.

Coach Rodriguez did know what he has in Tate, he doesn't quite know what he has in Devin.

But I was glad that Devin went back in, because he needed that scampler into the end zone to give him some run confidence.

Now, what I don't understand is why no one's talking about all the running backs?

Toussaint almost gets the TD on his first play? insane!

Great to see Tate step in and run the show.  And I do mean run the show.  12 for 12!  Damn.

Tate is the kind of kid we want to love - he just needed to get out of his feeling sorry for himself mode and get back into the game.  Saturday was a huge step towards re-earning the repect of everyone.

Welcome back Tate!

He should still transfer.  He's a great QB and deserves to be starting somewhere - not playing behind 1 or 2 QB's.  He's just not as ideal for RichRod's system as our other faster QB's.

I don't want to see him transfer but I have a feeling he may. We have DRob and DG as #1 and #2, according to when they played against BGSU. Next year, we have Sousa and possibly another QB coming in. Obviously, Sousa is going to redshirt since he is considered pretty raw but with great upside. Therefore, I do not see Tate staying after this season. However, I love the heart that Tate brings to this Michigan family and the leadership that he is regaining. I would love to see him stay all four years in the maize and blue, but I just don't see it happening.

You have only 42 MGoPoints as of this writing.  You seem to be underperforming at this blog.  I don't really see a future for you here.  You might have better luck at another blog.  I'm thinking one of the Penn State blogs would be better for you.  The academic standards are not quite as high.

Nothing agianst you of course.  I think you'll be happier, and be given better opportunities, if you transfer.  There are some okay Western and Central message boards too.

often seem inversely related to the intelligence of the post/poster.

Case in point - Negged 3 times for suggesting that Tate, in his own interest as a highly talented quarterback, seek a place where he will likely play more instead of sitting on the bench at Michigan.

Seriously??  Give me a fricking break.

I think you missed the point of the reply to your comment.  Basically there is an advantage of staying with Michigan, primarily for the student part of student-athlete.  And the point was also being made that maybe you should try and read more of the postings before commenting again.  If you do stick with this blog, you will hopefully get used to the high percentage use of analogy, and metaphor that goes on.

Sure you got negged on one comment, but you also got feedback.  So just move on and be ready to jump in on the next play.  But make sure you keep reviewing your game video, it's not all just typing and hitting the correct letter on the keyboard.  Sure you have to have the fundamentals, but if you can't form sentences that flow in the scheme and gain an edge, then you just won't be ready to see the field.

So you think that an athlete of Tate's caliber with serious aspirations of a professional football career should just flush that dream down the toilet so the Michigan can have a better backup QB?  You seriously think that a Michigan education is worth giving up on one's NFL dreams?  Seriously??

No calming necessary.

I would suggest you direct your post to the other neg happy posters/readers here.

Mgoblog is a fantastic blog but the intelligence of many commenters here is seriously lacking.  I'm starting to think the average commenter is about 9 or 10 years old and that those with the most MGopoints are about 5 or 6 years old.  Or maybe they're all just smoking some seriously good shit.

Bring on the negs, bitches.

Nobody is saying Tate should give up on any NFL dreams for a Michigan degree. But he doesn't HAVE to.

Alright, say he stays at Michigan under Rodriguez and plays as the #2. He will develop under one of the best known QB developers in the nation, earning high profile, if occasional playing time both during garbage time (polish stats), and injury situations (show high pressure capacity). He's already a well known name and is going to continue to be one. Because of his family, he's got NFL connections coming out the wazzoo. Finally, because of his stature, no matter how much he plays, he's never going to be a high draft pick, if he were to get drafted at all.

What will happen is, if he stays, he will get occasional playing time behind Robinson, continue to develop and polish and show off whenever he can, and eventually either get late round drafted 6-7th, or get plenty of UFA opportunities,  where he can make his way in the NFL regardless.

Mark Sanchez got drafted, and he barely played at all. Tate already has more playing time.

Ideal? perhaps not but he clearly can run the offense and he will be a valuable backup to Denard and/or Devin.  We need him and if you think he should leave, you're simply wrong.

If he wasn't  a good fit for the offense I don't think RR would have recruited him.   RR's had some recruting gaffs lately (Dorsey, et al ) but Tate is not one of them.

that Tate is too good to be relegated to permanent back up.  I believe him when he says he loves everything about Michigan football, but I do not believe that he will be here four years as an afterthought.  Denard is outstanding, and deserves all of the acolades that are being bestowed upon him, but if Michigan intends on keeping Tate, he needs to play other than just in Bowling Green blowouts.  If he does not, and he remains on the bench as the "in case Denard gets hurt guy," I find it likely that he will not be in the maize and blue after this year.  I am not saying there is really anything that can be done about it, but I think it is the case.  Tate is a starting QB, and unfortunately (and fortunately) for Michigan, it looks like we have a few of those.  He is a good QB and deserves to play.  I wish him the best regardless of where it is.

I think he could very well be the man in a few future games if D Rob goes down again.  We're very lucky to have a 2nd stringer that can step in and run the offense as well as he can.

1). It is mildly vexing, but also kind of awesome, that Michigan's most talent rich position is one of the only ones where you can only play one of them at a time (OK, generally.)

2). It's sometimes important to remember that Tate's still just 20 years old.  He's been raised his entire life to be a quarterback.  He's clearly highly competitive.  So perhaps he was disappointed when someone else was better than he was when competing directly against him, especially in light of all of the success he had last year.  While his initial reaction was perhaps not the greatest, are we hopefully and truly seeing the growth and continuing maturity of a young man who realizes if he competes, works hard, remains humble, and is a part of the larger team, he, too, will be successful.

So Tate, keep it up good sir and know that he's done something many people cannot do.  He didn't give up, rather he adjusted to a new reality and kept fighting nevertheless.

3). With each passing day, I become a little happier that there is not a permanent electronic record of everything I said, did, thought, felt, when I was 20 years old.  It would serve only to annoy me.

Consider the following:

1) Tate is only 16 games into what could be a 51 game career at Michigan - a lot of things can happen over the next 35 games.

2) RR is creative and will come up with ways to get the best players on the field - it is easy to image a package of plays that includes two of the QBs (...and I can't wait to see it).

3) If his ultimate goal is to play in the NFL he doesn't need to worry that being a back-up will prevent that from happening. Yes, I realize he is a long shot at the next level but that is true even if he is the starter.

4) Until proven otherwise let's believe what he says, he loves Michigan and wants to be part of this team.

EDIT:

5) Is it crazy to think that what we saw against Bowling Green won't be repeated more in the future? This offense should generate a handful of blow outs every year especially if the defense improves - as such there will be plenty of opportunity to play all three QBs.

If Tate transfers, he will have to sit out a year, and will only have 1 year remaning to play in a new system at a new program with new coaches and.... etc.

If he hadn't played this year, redshirted, transferred and sat out a year, then he'd have 2 years of eilgibility remaning, but now that a redshirt is (seemingly) out of the question, transferring and sitting out a year just for 1 year of eligibility at a new school doesn't make much sense to me.

Just my .02, but of course, nothing will surprise me.

Blazefire is correct.  When you sit out a year due to transferring, that doesn't count against your eligibility.  It's as simple as this: you can play football for 4 years.  It doesn't matter if you do it in 4 consecutive years, or take a redshirt year after your 3rd year, or transfer schools 3 times and play 1 year each at 4 different schools.  You can play football for 4 years.
