Deford on ESPN's hegemony
SI's Frank Deford speaks on NPR, from the point of view of journalistic integrity, on ESPN's monopoly over sports media. Which, due to ESPN's obvious dislike of all things good about Michigan, is of interest to us Michigan fans.
The listen is better than the read.

ESPN's near-monopoly on sports coverage is bad for everyone.

The MLB Network has made this baseball season infinitely greater.
Yeah MLB Network is cool. I like the live look-ins. It is by far better then NFL Network and NBA TV.
correct. ESPN has grown to be a corporate conflict of interest nightmare. Why would they report on the quarterback who has recently been accused of sexual assault when they are running new commercials that have him featured prominently? They have not aggressively pursued the Reggie Bush story at USC because Bush's attorney works for ESPN.
Deford even compromises himself by taking a check from ESPN. It's kind of like the City of Detroit these days- everyone is on the payroll.
If Ben Roethlisberger wants coverage on ESPN, he should retire and pretend like he wants to come back. Rachel Nichols would be camped outside of his house.

real journalism, which (with exceptions for certain wonderful pieces that come approximately one per year) I don't. One of the reasons for the growth of blogs like this one IMO is the entirely phony and wrongheaded expectation that people who write about sports should be journalists instead of fans.

It's like the city of Detroit...except ESPN has money.
Roethlisberger hasn't been charged with a crime. ESPN is right not to run the story. Don't get me wrong, ESPN is brutal in a great many ways, but the blind squirrel found an acorn this time.

a bad thing to have Rachel Nichols camped outside of your house.

she blew to get that job ever revealed?
She isn't. Not even close IMO.
