Coordinator & Assistant Salaries

Submitted by LJ on
In one of the Greg Robinson threads, someone mentioned that M might have trouble finding top flight coordinators because there's only $1.95 million budgeted for assistant coaches. I'm curious to know, Is this really low compared to other big name programs like OSU, ND, UT, UF, etc? If that actually is keeping us from looking at bigger name hires, it seems silly to pinch pennies on coordinators when we're willing to spend hundreds of millions on facilities upgrades, important as they may be.

The nine Missouri assistant coaches will earn a collective $1,451,396 this year. That’s slightly more than the average Big 12 staff earned last season, according to a 2006 NCAA survey of the six major Division I-A conferences

so cheap when it comes to coach's salaries? Sailboat Bill is all about spending a quarter of a BILLION dollars on a new stadium, but he doesn't want to shell out the kind of cash it takes to lure top coaching talent to produce a team that will win in said stadium. I don't know about most of you, but I, for one, would rather sit on a pile of dog s**t in row 92 and watch M gang tackle Terrelle Pryor than munch on canapés in my luxury suite while Johnny Noname calls a prevent defense on third and short. Bottom line: you get what you pay for (see, e.g., Steve Sarkisian).

Sailboat Bill is all about spending a quarter of a BILLION dollars on a new stadium You understand the principle of debt, right? We're not paying $250 million cash.

Marlon, are you under the impression that Michigan pays their assistants less than comparable programs and because of this we cannot lure in quality assistants? It seems that that is what you're saying. Back that up with something, because I'm not that's true. Thanks.

Sam Webb and Tom Beaver both have mentioned this before. The salaries Michigan pays its two coordinator positions is not on par with some of the other big name programs in D1 football. Both have stated on their Sunday morning radio show on WTKA that Rich Rod was somewhat limited as to who he could realistically offer the DC position to. Illinois just offered Larry Johnson Sr. in the area of $400,000-$500,000 a year to leave Penn St. and become their new DC (which he turned down). USC is going to pay jeremy Bates around $1,000,000 a year to be their new OC. Michigan will be paying its coordinators around $250,000-$300,000 a year. This might be an explanation as to why a guy like Ron Vanderlinden was unwilling to interview for the job.

for the back up stats. In addition: Steve Sarkisian, USC's OC, reportedly made between $500,000 and $750,000 per year before he left for Washington. He took Nick Holt with him to Washington's to be the Huskies's new DC coordinator; Holt made $500,000 per year while at USC. Monte Kiffin, Tennessee's DC, will make $1.2 million this year, plus a $300,000 bonus. Ed Orgeron, Tennessee's D-line coach, will make $650,000 this year. Jim Chaney, Tennessee's OC, will make $380,000 this year. Tennessee's football coaching staff will make a combined $5.325 million in 2009. Will Muschamp, Texas's DC, makes $900,000 per year. Larry Fedora, Oklahoma State OC, makes $393,000 per year. Gary Crowton and Bo Pelini (now at Nebraska) made $400,000 per year at LSU. John Tenuta made $400,000 per year while he was the DC at Georgia Tech. Rick Trickett, O-line coach at FSU, makes $300,000 per year. Jimbo Fisher, FSU's OC, made $625,000 last year. It is true, WolvinLA. And you're welcome.

If you want to reread, I never said it wasn't. You just made a very absolute point and didn't back it up with anything at all. I prefer when people don't do that. Because I don't have these numbers memorized, I like to see facts. The only facts that were in the thread previously were from the Big 12, where we stack up quite nicely. Also, the SEC pays it's head coaches far more than the Big 10 (M included) so I would expect it to do the same with its assistants. Another thing that it is difficult to do is compare the salaries of coordinators who have held the position for a long time to those who are new to the position. Generally, one's income increases over time.

Looks like M is at the top of salaries if the following is correct. According to MGoBlue site, we have 9 assistant coaches. MDaily lists: Magee 275 K$ Barwis 190 Gibson 190 Tall 180 Frey 180 Smith 170 Jackson 170 Dews 170 Hopson 170 Assistant Strength Coaches (7 of them) total of 330 K That adds to $2,020,000 (rounded) If anyone knows of additional coaches, let me know.
