Carl Nicks

I'm sure most everyone has seen or heard the story about Carl Nicks going back to Nebraska and aplogizing for being an idiot while playing football there. Link: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Saints-lineman-is…. One of the topics in this story really caught my eye though: "Nicks visited Nebraska's campus Wednesday to apologize and make amends for the bad behavior he displayed while "attending school" there. "Attending school" is in quotes because Nicks didn't actually do a lot of that. He admits he skipped classes and didn't have the work ethic he should've." Could you imagine if this was a quote coming out of the RR Michigan program right now? If Nicks was doing this at Nebraska how many other players are doing the same thing there? And if he was doing this how was he staying eligible? Rosenpuke would have a field day with a story about this in the Michigan program, but I'm guessing nothing will come of it.

When Osbourne and Switzer were ruling the roost and probably worse. I dont preach from the Ivy League student athlete handbook, but Id be pretty embarrassed if this were to happen at Michigan in any era. Instead of making a bigger idiot of yourself and apologizing and making everyone look as stupid as Nicks did put your money where your mouth is and provide scholarships with your riches that you blatantly pissed on.

I wonder if he was the backup guard for Oakland and didn't happen to be a starter on a team that just won the Super Bowl if he would still feel compelled to make this effort. It's hard to knock him doing it, but it's the first thing I thought of when I read the article.

I will take the opposite of aquaman's POV here: if Nicks was a second-stringer, he would have more to gain by kissing ass at his "alma mater." Now that he has a Super Bowl ring, it would be a lot easier for him to sweep it all under the table. To me, this just sounds like someone manning up for mistakes he made when he was young and aplolgizing to those he feels he let down. Since he appears to be doing this on his own and not as part of a 12-step program, it is even more impressive to me. I will be a lot more impressed if he actually goes back and gets his degree, though.

Are we ever going to reach a point where we're not going to dissect EVERY negative news story about a football program's "non-compliance" or "thuggery" and compare it to the Rosenberg hatchet job?
