I was going to try and look this up, because someone was asking for it in another thread, and as you say, should be must read before The Game. You'll never find a greater hive of scum and villainy.

I also try and read "The Age of Miracles" every year about this time too, written by Brian on the verge of The Game during the horrific season. It is one of the best posts Brian has ever written. It's not only inspirational in regards to the looming game, but it's inspirational for life as well -- particularly for 20-somethings like myself stuck in that strange post-grad stage of life.

For as much as I respect about Woody Hayes, there is little question in my mind that the idoltization of him is the main culprit for Ohio State's fan behavior. When your program idol tore up yard markers in rage, had his team tear down a revered banner and punched a player, it is going to drastically lower the bar for what your base considers acceptable conduct.

Happens to me all the time in Colorado... last week hiking... got a fuck Michigan from inbred ohioans.  At Park Burger in Denver last weekend, there were 4 columbus slobs dropping f bombs everywhere while people were trying to enjoy themselves.

I've read the story before and enjoy it but the idea of Brian actually getting in an altercation is somewhat laughable.

And this is why I refuse to ever go to a game in Ohio, whether Michigan or anyone else is playing. No one should have to risk bodily injury just to go to a goddamn sporting event.

I feel the same way, as do many other fans.  The only problem with this is that this means we'll probably never take over their stadium the way they did to ours in '09.  OSU never has that issue.  Sadly, their savagery works to their advantage.

with these idiots 365 days a year. Trust me I proudly display a U of M flag and other stuff in my yard and I can bet my life savings if we win this weekend I will pay dearly for this...

Try this one: 2003, walking down Hoover to the stadium. In front of me are 2 (drunk?) Buckeye fans. Showing true class, they are chanting,"Fuck Michigan" with the classic 'clap, clap' in between their chants. In classic Michigan fanhood, the Blue faithful were just looking at them with the same disgusted look that Clark Griswold displayed when Randy Quaid showed up in Xmas Vacation.

i've been to columbus 3 times 2000,2002 and 2006 as an adult and another 4 times as a kid (1990,92,94,96)i don't see myself ever going back. every single timeas an adult i've had an altercation. never any fists thrown but ive had no less than a shoving match with fans outside the stadium every single time.  i go to games with my same 4 buddies. none of us are agressive or are the types to start shit. none of us back down either though. it's come close to blows several times with both buckeye fans and other michigan fans stepping in. i've also had full beers thrown on me, been called every name in the book. i remember my first trip down there in 1990 i was 9 years old with my dad and grandpa and uncle. i'll never forget a drunk buckyeye calling my grandpa a "fucking faggot" as we walked in. for me to ever go back there it would have to be another 1 vs. 2 matchup. i'm 30 yrs old now and in my eyes thats too old to be dealing with that kind of shit.

The most unfathomable thing of all is that they're more violent after they win.  You'd think they'd be angrier after a loss.  When we win at Michigan Stadium, I usually find myself feeling a little sorry for the visiting fans I see, knowing they probably have a long trip home.  I can't possibly imagine wanting to fight a rival fan then - especially after a game that would make us 12-0.

...I was arguing with an Ohio State friend of mine tonight about Brian's incident, and I'm wondering if any of you have been witness to an unfair, unprovoked drubbing of an opposing team's fans during their stay in Ann Arbor.

I've personally not witnessed it to the magnitude that Brian mentions here, but my friend claims he's been the brunt of some somewhat serious physical assault while visiting our fair campus.

I find it ironic or insightful (however you want to take it) how Brian mentions the mentality that fanbases adopt after their head coaches. The "paranoia" of Joe Paterno that transcended the Penn St. fanbase is amazing. The "hatred" endorsed by Woody Hayes fueled Ohio's fanbase and to some extent Jim Tressel did the same thing but in a more deceptive way. Hopefully Brady Hoke emobodies Bo;s lessons, respect the opponent but have the slight arrogance and toughnes of Michigan football.
