Bob, T.J. & Smoker

Submitted by EZMIKEP on
A few friends of mine went out to have a few drinks and watch the MSU - Northern Iowa game this past weekend. We all live in Lansing. All are UM fans, but I was the only one wearing colors that night. We went with the intent of going to a sports bar downtown called the Nuthouse but when we arrived it was packed wall to wall so we skipped over to a new bar next door that just opened upstairs called the Loft above Harem. This is where they were having a T.J. Duckett MSU basketball party as a promotion for Harem's new bar.
All of us walk upstairs, go to the bar and order a few beers. Its big and open but all of the tables have already been taken up except one and this particular table doesn't have any chairs so we walk up and just use it to set our drinks on. As we are watching the game and shooting the shit, T.J. Duckett comes walking up and says "Hey I am T.J. and there are a few chairs right over there that are free so go ahead and take them." He starts shaking hands with all of my friends and then he looks up at me and my jacket and sees it has MICHIGAN FOOTBALL embroidered on it. Disgusted he doesn't shake my hand. He then looks at everyone and says "Are all of you Michigan Fans?.." We answer a quick yes. Then he tells us something to the affect of -"I got somebody for you, i'll be right back..."-

2-3 minutes later he walks over With Jeff Smoker and says "Do you know who this is?!" Everybody says yes and then he drops right into the shit talk. "You remember Bob?! We put it on ya'll that year!! Yukyukyuk. blah blah blah...

I was somewhat enjoying this even though he brought up a really touchy subject because I felt like they had just taken their best shot and it was such a fraud and complete miracle that even manufactured that win. If this is what you are proud of and boasting then I feel "semi-sorry" for you. T.J. sees this didn't really get the reaction he was hoping for and walks away. Jeff Smoker stays and says, "Well it's good for the state of Michigan and all so I know you guys are all here to represent for our state right??" I looked at him as seriously as possible and said "Absolutely not. When was the last time you rooted for Michigan, your not kidding anyone." Jeff Smoker got a very serious and irritated look on his face, mumbled some stuff under his breath I couldn't hear and walked away waving his hand saying, "Bullshit." This coming from the guy who just came over on a whim with T.J. to rub in a lucky victory from almost a decade ago.

I kind of chuckled a bit, took a sip of my drink and tried to grasp what had just happened. I just cannot ever imagine a scenario where Mike Hart, or Desmond, or Long or Charles etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. - - - - has to come up, introduce themselves, especially at their own party and boast to a fan or fans, who weren't even bringing anything up to gloat about before hand, just to rub in a phony victory like that particular one in front of perfect strangers. It is definitively little brother syndrome at its finest. Involving actual players from the field, not a fan vs fan. Glad it happened though. That experience sums up everything I feel AND KNOW about Spartan sports culture.

Was I a bit of a dick for going into a Spartan party wearing Maize n Blue? Yeah maybe a bit. It wasn't planned and I do live in Lansing. But I was no more of a dick than the Spartans who tried to give me shit as I was walking to the Shoe in Columbus Ohio -4 hours away from their beloved East Lansing(and who knows how far from PSU who was owning Sparty that day)- in 2006. As they say, there is one everywhere you go. I guess that rule kind of applied to me that night except I don't feel like the jerk...

If I remember correctly, isn't Jeff Smoker from somewhere in Pennsylvania? It seems kinda strange that he would be all "rah rah rah" about the state of Michigan. Anyways, I think you may have gone a bit overboard. It seems like they were joking around, and it's tough to still be outwardly bitter about the game ten years later. One of my Michigan State friends tried to angrily talk shit to Mike Hart in a bar a couple years ago, and it immediately made me think of my friend as a classless dickhead. At some point, hatred towards former players becomes a bit unnecessary/ridiculous.

I agree with you, he was probably trying to talk some good natured trash--which is exactly what I would have done. The point of being a fan is to have fun with it. I was in Vegas and randomly met an old USC player from the early 80s. It was a lot of fun talking shit back and forth for a while. FWIW, he thinks Kiffin is "going to struggle."

I must have misunderstood. In the final paragraph, it seems like you are trying to imply, "I don't feel like a jerk, but yes I was acting like a pretty big jerk." Either way, it was definitely a funny story. Took some cojones to walk into the party wearing Michigan gear.

They cheated, and they gloried in the cheat. And if you don't think U-M's team was bitter, I've got 6 straight wins they put out for the first time in decades that disagree with you. I never really liked Spartans; after that, it was on, like Donkey Kong! And I would have told TJ he shouldn't have even been in the game, because he should have been ejected for kicking a player like a punk bitch.

Agreed re them just messing around. I'm from Kalamazoo and can vouch that TJ's a really great guy and good natured about the rivalry. TJ and Smoker didn't stop the clock and of course they're going to get a kick out of it. And I can say that, likewise, if we had won the State game a few years ago because of the touchdown when our player (Minor?) landed on the pylon and was called 'in' as a result, I would enjoy giving State fans crap for it, and I'm sure our players would, too. I'm sure they get a lot of trash talk from Michigan fans (and others) and I'm guessing he just thought it was hysterical to have Michigan fans around when Spartan Bob happened to show up somewhere.

from a friend of Smoker that he is working the shipping dock for a moving company in Grand Rapids. Something tells me you definitely got the last laugh...

I wasn't making fun of him having a normal job, just found it interesting/laughable where he ended up since the overall picture of him is painted as arrogant. But you're right, feel free to judge my taste and infer things based on a post about an ex-MSU quarterback...

I'm also a Michigan fan living in Lansing. I have run into TJ and Smoker on occasion before as well. If it's a party atmosphere and they know there's a Michigan fan around, they love to bring up the '01 game and rub it in a little. All in fun. It wasn't Smoker or TJ who stopped the clock... you can't really hold that against them. TJ in particular has no problem talking about any of the M-MSU games he played in. Or his recruitment between those two and ND. You can hate them when they are on the team and playing... but to hold it against them 10 years later is a bit much. Whether you knew it beforehand or not, you were at their party. To watch their school play. Not sure what you expected or why you are offended.

Mine saw it more as a rub because of the slighted handshake & then bringing up Bob. Had T.J. shook my hand & not given me that look I would have taken it as just fun, but that wasn't the vibe given off. Then again I will admit I have had so many ridiculous incidents with Spartans over the years that my view might be slightly twisted. Slightly.

Sounds like TJ was just trying to be a nice host, but Smoker's drug problem didn't really hide the fact that he was apparently quite a jerk in college anyway. You hate to see a guy go through what he did, but it also sounds like he is still pretty immature. Good story, though. And it didn't sound like you were being a dick - you went to watch a basketball game between MSU and Northern Iowa. As long as you didn't act like a jerk and cheer Northern Iowa mercilessly or your outfit wasn't outrageous, there is no reason you can't wear clothes from rivals.
