Miles Bridges hit some key shots late. [Bryan Fuller]

Even against a Michigan State team that's not up to Tom Izzo's usual standard, Michigan needed a lot to go right if they wanted to pull out a win in the hostile confines of the Breslin Center.

Very little went right.

The Wolverines struggled to score, shooting 40% on twos and 27% on threes. Zak Irvin had the worst game of his career, going scoreless on eight shots with three turnovers in 36 minutes. Derrick Walton was a bright spot with his aggressive drives to the basket, but while he scored 24 points and went 14-for-15 from the line, he couldn't get dialed in from long range, making only 2-of-9 threes. Moe Wagner, the only Wolverine who could consistently score from the field, only got up six shot attempts while saddled with foul trouble, and his fourth foul came on a preposterous double technical.

There were times when Michigan looked like the superior team, but they couldn't sustain them for long. The deciding stretch came early in the second half; starting at the 17:23 mark, when M trailed by a mere two points, the normally turnover-averse Wolverines coughed up the rock seven times in eight minutes. Suddenly, MSU had a double-digit lead, and the closest Michigan could get the rest of the way was four points as Miles Bridges, Nick Ward, and Cassius Winston closed the game out strong.

Given their offensive performance, Michigan was lucky to be this close. On the flip side, they managed to hang tight with MSU on the road while playing far from their best game. They'll have the whole week to work out this afternoon's issues before taking on a very beatable Ohio State squad at Crisler on Saturday. Two days later, they'll get a chance for revenge against the Spartans, and they'll need Irvin to show up for that one if they want a different result.

Playing our best we are better than average.  Probably is we rarely play our best.  Walton is finishing his career strong and I can respect his heart even when he's struggling.  If DJ played with as much heart on the road, it would make a huge difference.  Robinson will never shoot an open 3 after he just missed one.  Where's the shooter's mentality.  Donnal...Irvin...

The freshman are learning, will need some time.  Wagner is only going to keep getting better.  We look like an NIT team this year.  We have enough talent to squeak into the big dance, but there's not enough fire (outside of Walton and Wagner) to push this team over the top.  I hope I'm wrong.

Can't stand anything about sparty.  Ugh.

Go Blue.

Look at the guys making big impacts on their teams just this weekend; guys who Beilein couldn't convince: Trevon Bluiett (Xavier), luke kennard (Duke), cassius Winston (MSU), tyus battle (syracuse). Each guy came up big to help their team win. Then here we are fiddling around with zak irvin and derrick Walton. Why are we the ones that have to make due with the scraps? Is Xavier a better program than us? Why can't JB convince big time guys that this is the place to be? Does anyone believe that irvin and Walton would be the same players under 4 years with Izzo?

Maybe, maybe not.

What gets to me is this consistent refusal to pull in another Novak, scrappy guy that you can teach to shoot.  Michigan needs someone who will dive for the loose ball and generaslly act as the sand in an opponents gears.  They don't have anyone like that and I don't see why they can't grab someone like that and deploy him as a bench asset.

Long story short I think there's a hole in recruiting, almost more than a lack of talent.  Beilein has a great offensive system, always has.  He just needs to get someone to supplement and do the dirty work.

I don't know why anything less than elite is unaccaptable for the football program but the basketball program is treated like the little engine that could. My hope is that the standard for the basketball team is at least raised to some middle ground between those two extremes.

I'm with ya. I have a hard time with the whole recruiting clean argument that people throw out. I understand we don't want another controversy for heavens sake but my goodness the guys that we've missed out on that could have really elevated our teams the past 3 years has been abundantly frustrating. Even recruits from right here in MI. I also understand guys have to be perfect fits for Beileins system/program but at some point you have to take an educated risk with a top prospect that you can plug in and play. Not saying we have to be, or even could be one and done U. Even a two year kid every couple years would help out immensely. I get we aren't UK, Duke, Kansas, UNC, or UCLA but it just seems like we could do a little better. Hopefully this incoming class will have a couple dudes who can be effective early on.

i wish beilein would create more off the ball plays for those two.  they are the two best 3 pt shooters on the team.  run some picket fence plays; like UW did against us with koenig.

This was a worse offensive game than South Carolina.  Sure we shot better but had awful awful execution, awful shot selection, and tons of turnovers.  This wasn't fun to watch at all.  We aren't great but neither is MSU and they just played smarter and bullied their way to a win.
