5 star meltdown

Submitted by Ziff72 on

It's been said before, but the Texas and Florida meltdowns this year just shock me week after week.   As bad as our defense has been I at least can see the reasons for the problems.  What do the Florida and Texas fans reconcile themselves with when they look at their offenses?

I guess teamwork and chemistry do matter.

Are we still talking to Christian Westerman?  "Son don't you want to come to a stable program like the 1 here in Ann Arbor instead of the rebuilding project in Austin?"

The craziness of football this year highlights why you have to savor every win no matter how it looks.

It's nuts to think Florida won't recover with Burton or whatever other dual-threat QB they're grooming to take the reins next year. Their defense is second to none, and once the offense picks up they'll stomp everyone short of Bama just like they always do. Look at both Texas/Florida's last 3 recruting cycles. They will be just fine.

Meyer was under alumni/booster pressure to play Brantley because both his dad and uncle starred for the Gators.  "Double legacies" usually get every chance to succeed.  Plus, the Newton fiasco and Tebow's dominance left him a little short at the QB position.  AFAIC, Brantley is Steven Threet with better mechanics.  Thus the rather predictable results.

If Burton "does a Denard" during the offseason, he will be a very good QB the next couple of years.

I think most of the Gators fans I know (I live in SoFL; I know a lot) expected a season that wasn't as spectacular as the ones they've previously under Meyer, but I don't think they expected more than three losses.  They have two more tough games to go, too - I suppose it's possible that they could host The Horror: Swamp Edition, and FSU actually has a better record than UF right now.

Why?  Addazio's playcalling isn't great; as the announcers noted, some of their more talented players were just hanging out on the sidelines for most of the game, like Demps and Rainey.  Brantley isn't that great, and he doesn't fit the system that the veterans are used to running besides.  If Burton had some kind of spark, like he did in that one game earlier this year, Meyer is certainly canny enough to play him, but I'm pretty sure that he's not the answer this season, at least not the way Tebow was during his freshman season.

I also like to think that their hold on recruiting isn't as good as it once was, but I think that's a pipe dream.  The state, in particular the south, is so talent-rich that we can snap up some of the players, but there are lots more to go around for UF and FSU and UM, even if the latter two aren't the giants they used to be.

Reminds me of when I was a Resident Advisor at Michigan in the late 1970's....Lots of 5 star academic kids come into Michigan having been big studs in their high schools like being one of the top 2-3 students in their class and how they are going to get all A's.  After they take their first tests or finish their first semsters, they find out they are no longer big fish in small ponds but small fish in the great big ocean.   Just ask Florida and Texas and others, being a 5 star just means you were great in high school, does not mean you will be a stud on the next level.....
