Manny Harris Out Today Comment Count

Brian

In case you missed it in Tim's preview, this happened:

"Manny has made great strides both on and off the court over the last three years," Beilein said in a release. "Unfortunately he used poor judgment on Friday. It is best for Manny's future if he stays home and sits out this Purdue game. We will meet with Manny and the team again when we return to determine if he has learned enough from this suspension to rejoin the team for Tuesday's game. I am confident that this learning experience will be valuable in the future to both Manny and our basketball program."

Punch thrown? I can't think of much else that would warrant a suspension. Maybe Chris Kramer snuck into practice and Harris gave him a flaming elbow drop.

This reinforces my opinion on Harris's potential departure: he's not likely to go in the first round, but he's probably going to leave anyway. He and Beilein are not on the same page, it appears.

Didn't get to see yesterday's game. Son had a BB tournament all day. My observations were based on the last two games excluding yesterday. I have watched them on my computer and stand by the belief that they run JB's offense better w/o Manny right now. Floor spacing and movement is much better. Players aren't standing around watching "Manny be Manny". Sims puts up less of his patented 3-pt shots with less 10 off the shotclock too. A also think at this point that Morris and Douglas are the most important players going forward for this team. Morris is going to be a very good PG and Douglas is deadly as a spot 3-pt shooter, not a PG.

Manny has been a true Michigan man throughout his career thus far. Everyone makes mistakes and he will be just fine. At the same time, I respect Belein for his decision. Building the foundation to a successful program requires this type of discipline. Hang in there Manny, you will become a better man and player as a result. Beat Sparty on tuesday!

As far as recruiting goes. This incident with Manny Harris can't hurt Beilein's recruiting more than it already does. The two best players (Manny & DeShawn) were Amaker recruits. Beilein has not brought in much talent besides these two. If Manny leaves next year, Sims is already gone. Look at what is left. Novak and Douglass nice kids, but not talented basketball players. Beilein needs to bring in talent, talent wins not a system.

I hate this argument, because it can only be made by people who pay no attention: Beilein has essentially had 1 real class. In his first year, he had 1 month to sign anybody - he was hired in April, and Signing Day rolls around in May. He grabbed 3 players last minutes - Douglass and Novak, who he stole from Valpo, and Ben Cronin. Last year, in his first real recruiting class, he signed a top 100 prospect - Darius Morris, and at least one more well-thought of kid in Matt Vogrich. He beat out a number of Pac-10, Big East, and ACC schools for Vogrich and McLimans. The fact that these kids haven't saved the team yet is hardly surprising - they are FRESHMEN, and not every freshmen is immediately succesful. For an example, look at DeShawn Sims. Next year, he has another top-100 recruit signed (Smotrycz is #54 in the nation), and a solid shot at a second (#22 Trey Ziegler). In the following year's class, he already has a top 100 player signed (Brundidge). The simple fact is that Michigan's program was demolished by several years of horrendous Amaker recruitin - In Amaker's 4 final classes (2004-2007), he brought in 11 players, and only 3 would become starters (Harris, Sims, Udoh), and one of those would quickly transfer. Ron Coleman? Kendric Price? Jevohn Shepard? Reed Baker? K'Len Morris? Anthony Wright? I mean...that's why Douglass and Novak are starting today, it's why we have no depth.

1. He's the leading scorer in the Big 10. Only one player (because of injury) can make a case for Big 10 Player of the year. 2. He single handedly takes over games on the offense end without a supporting cast of offensive threats (outside of Sims - who to be honest was not playing well early in the season) 3. Last year, Jay Bilas said on national television that he thought Harris had the fastest first step off the dribble in the nation. 4. We all thought he might take off last year!!! 5. Thad Matta called both guys (Harris and Sims) "bona fide pros" - this coming from a guy who has coached a number of players who left early for the NBA. What more do you guys want. I agree - he has some faults, but if Jamal Crawford can make it in the NBA (and play lights out) Manny will be fine. With all that said, I wish he would stay in school, but I'm a realist, too. Learn Greek or Italian??? Seriously?
