Rememberance/Veterans Day Thanks Thread

Submitted by Canadian on
I want to thank anyone who has served and/or protected our great countries whether it be a world war or current missions we all should be very thankful.
Take a moment out of your day to think of those that have been lost and thank those who are still around.

Hard to believe this was 7 years ago already.  Western Parwan province in Afghanistan.  If I had it to do all over again I would, a million times over!!

or have served.  I'll add that one tangible way to show appreciation (for those who can afford it, is by donating to one of the many organizations who do good work, such as Wounded Warrior Project.  https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/default.aspx?tsid=1143&ovr_acv_id=1398&campaignSource=ONLINE&source=BS14107P

My stepson and four others were blown to bits in a Hummer in Afghanistan five years ago.  Groups like the USO, Wounded Warriors, etc. were there making a difference EVERY DAY...even paid for flights so mom could go visit him in the hospital.  Sadly, two of the five died instantly and the others (including ours) will forever struggle with their injuries.

Also, to the total douche who decided to just negbang the entire vets appreciation thread...GO FUCK YOURSELF.

Today I thank both our veterans and those men and women who serve or have served world wide.  It would be my hope and prayer that no one anywhere would have to risk life and limb for a nation...

Maybe the only  good thing to come from 9-11 is the nation's (and my own) renewed respect for the  military and for vets.  I strongly believe that a serviceman is no better or worse than anyone else based solely on his/her service, but I  also believe that everyone who laid his/her ass on the line in defense of our nation has done at least 1 very very honorable thing in his/her life.

I was in the Navy for 10 years.  I was stationed aboard the attack submarine USS Hawkbill for 6 years and have incredible memories.  I did numerous deployments including two deployments to the Arctic (I might of left my Michigan mug at the North Pole.)  When I got out I wanted to go to school.  I was accepted at U of M and the reception I got at Michigan was fantastic.  I got to participate on the pre-game festivities for the Veterans Day game against Illinois (Rich Rod was still coach) and got to be on the field.  I said "Go Blue" to Denard, and Dave Brandon shook my hand.  As a son of a Michigan alum, who grew up at Michigan Stadium on Saturdays, this was absolutley amazing for me.  The best part was standing in the North endzone after being recognized as Student Veterans and having the entire student section sing The Victors.   I have now graduated with my degree in History.   Thanks to all who have served, thanks to the University of Michigan for realizing the potential of Veterans, and GO BLUE!

One grandfather was in London during the blitz, in service. The other fighting in SE Asia for Australia. My father was an air force pilot (RCAF, ret.), also served as a UN observer in nasty spots like 1980's civil-war Beirut. Still won't talk about it, but it was much more than observing.

Thank you on both sides of our border to all who serve, to all who support. Our turn to salute you.

Speical thoughts here for Nathan Cirillo and Patrice Vincent, RIP.
