Stauskas Named First Team All-American by NABC

Submitted by Raoul on

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has named Nik Stauskas a first-team All-American. This follows his being named second-team All-American by the Sporting News and being shut out of the USBWA All-America teams. He now has a very good chance of gaining second-team consensus All-American status, with just the AP left to name their choices (out of the four All-American honors used by the NCAA to determine consensus first- and second-team All-Americans).

Here's a rundown of Stauskas's postseason honors from the Michigan press release on this:

Nik Stauskas' 2013-14 Postseason Honors
• NABC All-America, first team
• Sporting News All-America, second team
• USA Today All-America, third team
• Big Ten Player of the Year
» Big Ten Coaches
» Big Ten Media
» Collegehoopsdaily.com
» CollegeSportsMadness.com
• All-Big Ten, first team
» Big Ten Coaches (only unanimous selection)
» Big Ten Media (only unanimous selection)
» Collegehoopsdaily.com
» CollegeSportsMadness.com
• USBWA District V Player of the Year
• USBWA All-District V Team
• NABC All-District, first team

Corrected consensus All-American info: The consensus picks are determined by assigning 3 points for first team, 2 for second, and 1 for third (if there is one). The top five plus ties are named consensus first team; the next five plus ties are second team. Here's what the standings look like, with the AP picks still to come:

9 - Nick Johnson, Arizona

9 - Doug McDermott, Creighton

9 - Jabari Parker, Duke

8 - Shabazz Napier, UConn

8 - Russ Smith, Louisville

-------------------------------------------

7 - Sean Kilpatrick, Cincinnati

6 - Andrew Wiggins, Kansas

5 - Nik Stauskas, Michigan

4 - Cleanthony Early, Wichita State

4 - C.J. Fair, Syracuse

--------------------------------------------

3 - T.J. Warren, North Carolina State

2 - Melvin Ejim, Iowa State

2 - Marcus Paige, North Carolina

2 - Fred VanVleet, Wichita State

2 - Scottie Wilbekin, Florida

It appears that the only way that Stauskas would not be a consensus second-team All-American would be for Early, Fair, and Warren all to pass him, which seems highly unlikely as Warren would have to be named first team by the AP.

Here's the list of Michigan's consensus second-team All-Americans:

  • Cazzie Russell - 1964
  • Bill Buntin - 1965
  • Henry Wilmore - 1972
  • Campy Russell - 1974
  • Phil Hubbard - 1977
  • Glen Rice - 1989
  • Rumeal Robinson - 1990
  • Jalen Rose - 1994
