Film Analysis Ep 7.1 - Offensive Domination vs. Wisconsin

Couple notes overall about the positive plays as a part of this episode:

  • The OL performed really well as a unit. There was a lot of pass-offs, good timing off of doubles, and it looked like they were always on the same page.
  • Patterson is great at his fakes.

Tried a different resolution recording for this one, so it should hopefully be a bit higher quality.

7.1.1 - Q2 15:00 - 1st & 10 - UM15 - 81 yard run for Patterson

  • Michigan debuts an arc belly zone read run concept here. Good double from Runyan & Gentry. McKeon does well on his arc block on the edge. Wisconsin defenders aren’t expecting Patterson to keep here, resulting in a big play.

7.1.2 - Q2 13:37 - 2nd & G - WIS2 - TD Higdon

  • Inside zone read for TD. Onwenu & JBB get great movement on their double team. Good block from Gentry on the DB on the edge. Mesh point wasn’t great, but Higdon throws Van Ginkel down in the end zone :)

7.1.3 - Q2 6:49 - 1st & 10 - UM43 - 28 yard pass to Eubanks

  • Great job for Higdon to help Ruiz on the NT on this PA pass - saves the play. Nice work from Patterson to look the DB off of Eubanks and delivers an easy, catchable ball in space.

7.1.4 - Q2 2:09 - 1st & 10 - WIS49 - Pass to DPJ for 17 yards

  • Gentry is beat late here after a ton of time in the pocket, getting away with a slight hold here. Great concentration from DPJ here to still reel in the catch despite the tipped pass.

7.1.5 - Q3 12:19 - 2nd & 10 - UM41 - 25 yard run by Higdon

  • Outside zone  / pin-pull concept here. Great job by everyone on the OL, especially Bredeson on his pull. Good patience from Higdon, who reads his blocks really well on this play.

7.1.6 - Q3 10:28 - 3rd & 1 - WIS7 - Patterson run for TD

  • Inside zone blocking. Not a great push by OL but Wisconsin does stack the box. Looks like Patterson reads the CB, correctly keeps. Play-side LB completely fooled. Would like to see DPJ with a better block, but TD!

7.1.7 - Q3 10:21 - 2PT - WIS3 - Conversion good - Collins Catch

  • Nice play design here on fake jet sweep boot. Patterson has lots of room to operate here, going outside to inside on his reads. Looks like he had Higdon late, but Collins running wide open in the back of the end zone.

7.1.8 - Q3 6:51 - 2nd & 1 - UM29 - 17 yard run for Higdon

  • Split-zone run for Higdon here. Key block from Onwenu on LB#43. Great double from JBB & McKeon and strong block from Wangler on the edge. Higdon has a ton of room to run through.

7.1.9 - Q3 2:24 - 1st & 10 - UM20 - 16 yard run for Higdon

  • Another split-zone for Higdon. Similarly great blocking all around, but Higdon decides to cut left here instead of right. Seems like the wrong decision, but makes some nice moves to still pick up a big gain.

7.1.10 - Q4 14:24 - 2nd & 5 - WIS47 - 11 yard run for Higdon

  • McKeon gets BLASTED by Edwards on this split-zone run. Wangler overruns his block and gets away with a hold. Higdon has no option except to bounce and does well to pick up a decent gain, here.

7.1.11 - Q4 5:25 - 3rd & 4 - WIS44 - TD Run McCaffrey

  • McKeon & Gentry do really well on their assignments for this zone read and McCaffrey outruns an All-American LB for a TD.

Excellent. Great watch. Thank you!!! Very excited about how well the OL blocked. We did get away with 4 holds or illegal blocks it seems. Hope it continues to happen next week. :)

I love watching this team expand their offense a little more each week. It's been a long time since we've seen a Michigan offense execute this well.

Can't wait 'til Saturday.
