I thought Carl made the right move. That kid didn't throw down his gun, he looked like he might be trying something.
The guy was dead as soon as he didn't drop the gun. They could have made him look worse. Poor directing if you ask me.
I think the directing was great for this scene. The kid appeared to be young and weak, thus having Carl kill him shows Carl is losing it.
I may just not be understanding your comment fully either, i am interpreting what you are saying as they could have made the kid appear more intimidating.
They could've made Carl look more unhinged if the situation was less 50/50. A lot of people would say Carl did the right thing. The scene should've been way more obvious like the guy dropping the gun and then Carl shooting him.
But I'm not sure that it was bad direction. I think it was purposefully vague, so people could fall on either side of it; not a way to illustrate Carl as lost it. If anything, it might show he's taken Shane's roll when Shane wasn't losing it...that this is how you have to act in this world if you want to stay alive.
In any case, I agree, Hershel was way off base. He not only didn't drop his gun, he was advancing forward. You don't "hand someone" your gun. Because no one should ever let you get that close. Drop the gun or die. Should be an easy choice. Unless you think you can take advantage of the situation.
Watching Talking Dead now, but way more excited about GoT. Definitely watching it again tonight.
My book dilemma is really nagging at me now, though. I guess it's a bridge I'll cross when I get there... and that may be a moot point considering i've only read the first 200 pages of book 2 since mid September. At that rate, HBO will finish season 4 by the time I get a quarter of the way through SoS unless I pick up the pace in the summer.
Unsolicited advice on your dilemma: it's almost certainly not worth worrying about the decision til we see how far into SoS this season takes us. I'll say this though: Unlike the first two books, SoS ends not with a preview chapter, but with an epilogue. I don't know what your threshold is for learning stuff from the book that you'd rather save for the show. Depending on the end of this season, I might suggest finishing the book but not the epilogue. It would let you split the remaining surprises, and the epilogue has no major plot advancement, only a little something to hook your interest into the next book.
One last comment before I'm out for the night:
Peter Dinklage was FANTASTIC tonight in his scene with his father, most of which he had no lines. Give him another Emmy now.
Late to the party. I watched TWD finale and thought it was a pretty good finish. I'm glad we didn't loose anyone huge tonight. I can't believe people are complaining about not having a cliffhanger. Also there is a new showrunner for next season and he also directed the episode "clear" which was one of my favorites of season 3. Can't wait for season 4.
