M SB wins 2 today, Sweeps series against ohio

The Michigan Softball team had its best series of the year, this weekend in Columbus.  We smoked them Friday 10-2, then took 2 from them today 11-4 and 6-5.

Sara Driesenga started the first game and went the distance.  She finished the game with 4 ER off 5 hits.  She struck out 4 and walked 5. She also went 3 for 5 at the plate.

The offense is clicking in mid-season form by scrapping up 16 hits.  Yes, that is correct.  I said 16 (sixteen) hits.  Chiddy led the way with a 2 for 3 performance and getting 3 RBIs and scoring 2 runs.  Colie game out of her mini-slump by going 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Ashley, Lyndsay and Steph Kirkpatrick each had 2 hits.

The second game was a little closer but not as close as the score would indicate.  Haylie got the start and had a complete game.  Things were a little rough on Haylie in the first inning.  She had one pitch she which she could have back.  It was a meat-ball for ohio 1B Evelyn Carrillo, who sent it for a ride for a grand slam.  After that 1st inning, Haylie settled in and pitched a wonderful game.  She ended up with 4 ER off 5 hits.  She struck out 4 and walked 3.

The offense was led by Amy Knapp.  She was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored. Bree Evans went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.  We had 3 errors in the second game which can't make Coach happy.

Now I can say that we are starting to get on track.  ohio is a very good team this year.  They will finish in the top half of the B1G.  We should have swept Indiana last week too but that is how things go.  Great job ladies.  Keep up the good work.  We never lost faith in you.

I just hope everyone on this board realizes that we have an icon for a coach.  She is the best and I would not trade her for anyone including Candreas.

Colie Sappingfield had a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Mochigan Softball team to victory against Bowling Green 12-2.  She finished the day 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBIs.  What a wonderful day for Colie.  She has been struggling of late that this is just what the Doctor ordered for her.  Colie is not known for hitting home runs.

Sara Driesenga played one of her best games today against BGSU.  She was in the circle today and received the win.  She pitched all 7 innings.  She gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits.  She walked 4 and struck out 4.

Sara was also a leader at the plate.  She went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.  Chiddy also went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Lindsay Doyle went 2 for 2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Overall we ended up with 13 hits on the day.  We had 1 error as well.  This game is certainly needed for a confidence booster.  Bowling Green is not a Top 10 team, but a win is a win.

Great Job ladies.  Keep up the good work.  Awesome Job today Sara.  We knew you could do it and we support you 100%.

Sara Driesenga was given the ball again today against #25 LSU in the Tiger Classic.  Sara scattered 3 hits over 7 innings.  She gave up 1 ER on 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2.  Coach Hutch gave her a break and had Ashley Lane bat for her.

Bree Evans had the hot bat today.  She went 3 for 4 with a run scored.  Freshman Lauren Sweet kept her hot bat moving as well by going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Nicole Sappingfield had a good day as well going 3 for 4.

Coach juggled the line up a little today.  She had Mandy Gardner playing first base.  I think Mandy will be the 1st baseman on a regular basis.  Mandy had a quick hands and strong pop in her bat

Overall it was a good test for the youngsters who are proving themselves early.  We are getting hits from everyone in the lineup, which is great in softball.  The lineup from top to bottom is very strong.  I am so looking forward to this season.

Michigan SB mercies Lil' Sister 8-0

Michigan SB mercies Lil' Sister 8-0

The Michigan Softball team is hosting Lil' sister tonight at Alumni Field.  Nicole Sappingfield is silently missing from the line up.  She injured her knee on the last play of the game last weekend.  A result from a collision for a fly ball.

Lindsay Doyle is batting in the #2 slot and defensively in LF.  Marley Powers takes Lindsay's DH position at the #8 slot.

Michigan comes into the weekend #2 in the nation.  ASU remains #1, and hosts #12 Stanford this weekend.  ASU won the first game of three today 3-1.

In the Big 10 race, Indiana won today 2-1 as they host Purdue this weekend.

UPDATE:  Michigan scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th for the mercy rule win.  Dorian Shaw was the offensive hero today going 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored, including the 2 run walk off in the 6th.  Amanda Chidester went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Caitlin Blanchard went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

JT was awesome on the rubber today for the shutout.  She had a perfect game going into the 5th inning.  She finished with 1 hit and 13 Ks with zero walks.  What a great time to get back on track from her rotator cuff injury.

Now all we need is Colie to come back next week.

Congrats to all the seniors.  Thank you so very much for all your dedication to Michigan and the sport of Softball.  You all will be missed very much.  Everyone here on MGoBlog wishes you all the success in the world after this season.

But first, lets win a NC.  Blue Dragon??????   Show us how its done.

The Michigan Softball team eeked out another close victory today at Alumni Field.  The girls battled every inning and took the lead in the 5th inning by scoring 3 runs.  Game-time temperature was 60 degrees under mostly cloudy skies with zero wind.

Bree Evans could not extend her 19 game hit streak, going 0-3 on the day.  The Michigan consecutive game hit streak record is held by Nicole Sappingfield who completed this task earlier this year at 20 consecutive games with a hit.

Jordan Taylor was on the rubber today and pitched very well despite getting behind early.  She finished the game with 1 ER off 6 hits, striking out 5, 2 HPB and walking none

Dorian Shaw was the offensive hero today by going 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.  She recorded the game winning RBI in the 5th inning with a double off a 3-2 pitch.  Colie Sappingfield scored from 1st.  Dorian scored later in the inning.

Colie went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Amanda Chidester went 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Lindsay Doyle went 1 for 3 and scored the tying run.

Today was a fun game to watch.  Minny was up 2-0 and had all the momentum.  But the karma was with us today and a nearly sold out crowd.  This weeked is Veteran's Appreciation Weekend.

In other softball action, #1 ASU beat Washington earlier today 6-4.  #3 Texas was bitch-slapped by Texas A&M yesterday.  #4 Florida spanked #5 Tennessee.

This loss by Tennessee could mean that we will be paired with Tennessee in the Supers.  Many think the NCAA has a "love-fest" with Michigan-Tennessee matchup.  I dont think Tennessee will drop enough to warrant a #15 national seed.  I still think it will be ND.

The Michigan softball team lost today against Iowa at Alumni Field.  The score was 4-2 .  This puts the team's overall record at  41-4.  Game-time temperature was 71 degrees with the wind out of the north at 2 kts.

This is only the 2nd Big Ten loss, and we are now tied with Indiana atop the Big 10 standings.  Stephanie Speierman was on the rubber today.  This was probably her worst game of the season.  She struggled in just about every inning.  She gave up 3ER off 9 hits, stuck out 6 and walked 2.  She also gave up one tater.

The offense didnt help her out much by leaving the bases loaded in 2 innings.  The only bright spot in the line up was Nicole Sappingfield.  She went 2 for 3 with the only 2 RBIs that we could muster.

Hutch did something very interesting in the 5th inning.  Stephanie worked herself into a jam with bases loaded and no outs.  Hutch calmly walked out to the mound and told her that she trusted her and for her to pitch her way.  The next batter looped one out into LF for an RBI.  Hutch still kept Stephanie in.  Stephanie settled down and struck out 2 to shut down the Hawkeyes.  This takes balls even from vetern coach.

This will probably drop us a few spots in the national polls but we are still good to host a regional in May.

The Michigan Softball team won a very critical game today against Illinois.  The socre was 8-6.  This is the first of 2 games today at Urbana.  This is a make-up game from yesterday's rain out.  It is critical because Illinois is tied with Indiana for 2nd place atop the Big 10 standings.  Indiana took 2 games from Wiscy this weekend to remain at 2 conference losses.

The game-time temperature was 61 degrees under sunny skies.  The wind was from the West at 10MPH.  This is wonderful weather for a ball game

The offensive hero was none other than my pre-season All-American selection Ashley Lane.  She went 2 for 3 from the dish with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored from a HR. Ashley now leads the team in HR, RBIs, Slugging % and doubles.  Amanda Chidester went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored via a HR.  Nicole Sappingfield went 2 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Jordan Taylor was in the circle today.  She wasnt her usual self today.  This was one of the ugliest wins that I witness this year.  But a win is a win.   She gave up 6 ER on 9  hits (1 HR), she struck out 9 and walked 2.  She also had 5 HBP.  This is a very high number for JT.  She will occasionally get 1 HBP per game but 5?  Not her best outing for sure.  But she gets the win which is the most important statistic.

This is the first game of a DH today.  The second game is just as important because #2 Indiana is keeping pace with us.  They only have 2 losses. #3 Illiinois has 3 losses after the first game today.  #4 Iowa is currently winning against NU, they currently have 3 losses.

The #2 Michigan Softball team spanked Western Michigan today at Alumni Field 6-1.   It pushed our record to 36-3.  Game time temperature was 56 degrees under sunny skies with a slight north wind.  Hutch had the girls in the road unis today.

The game could have been ugly early but Hutch put the brakes on.  She made changes early to allow the reserves players some reps.

Colie Sappingfield went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Ashley Lane was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.  Bree Evans went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.

Stephanie Speierman was given the ball today and gave up 1 unearned run while surrendering 1 walk along with 2 Ks and 4 hits.  She went 5 complete.  Hilary Payne continued to administer the pain as she was brought in to pitch in releif and picked up the save.  Payne pitched the final 2 innings.  Payne gave up no runs, 1 hit and recorded 3 Ks with no BBs.

We play Central Michigan University tomorrow at Alumni Field at 6pm.

Michigan Softball survives scare

Michigan Softball survives scare

Submitted by MGoSoftball on March 26th, 2011 at 5:03 PM

The Michigan Softball team received a scare today from a pesky Northwestern team.  It was the conference opener for both teams.  Game time temperature was 36 degrees.

NW pitcher Jessica Smith took a perfect game against us into the 4th inning when Colie Sappingfield singled to CF.  She was left stranded.  Smith allowed only 5 UM hits but we strung enough together to get the 2-1 win.  Our record is now 30-2.

In the 5th inning, Caitlyn Blanchard doubled to center.  Taylor Hasselbach pinch ran for her and scored on a single by Marley Powers.  Marley was left stranded.

Amy Knapp has only 2 HRs this year but the 2nd came when we needed it most.  She popped one over the left field wall in the top of the 7th to secure the win.

Colie Sappingfield finished the day 2 for 3 with a stolen base.  Amy Knapp only had the 1 hit, Caitlyn Blanchard had a hit and Marley Powers had a hit.

Jordan Taylor gave up 3 hits, struck out 9, walked 2 and had 2 HBP.  She pitched out of a jam in the 6th inning when NW had the bases loaded but did not allow a run.

NW scored their only run in the third inning on a single, stolen base then a single. NW is a very good team this year.  They are a traditional small ball team.  They like to bunt and run.  They have a low team slugging percentage so there is no surprise with NW.  They tell you every pitch that they are going to bunt and steal.  They dare the opponents to stop them.

The two teams play again tomorrow.

I know there is another important game this afternoon and later this evening, but I want to get this score in before the other games starts.

The Michigan Softball team won yet another game by defeating a ranked Louisville Cardinal team 4-0.  This win bumped their record to 23-0.

Jordan Taylor was on the rubber today and pitched a wonderful game.  She allowed 0 ER on 7 hits (only 1 was for extra bases).  She walked 1 while striking out 8

Bree Evans scored the first Wolverine run in the top of the 4th inning.  She led off the inning with a triple off the wall in right-center field.  Colie Sappingfield drove her in with a single.

The Wolverines broke it open in the top of the 7th.  Caitlan Blanchard lead off the inning with a triple off the wall in left center.   Doyle popped out to 1B.  Amy Knapp drew a walk and stole second.  Bree Evans hit a single to CF, scoring Blanchard.  A throwing error allow the speedy Evans to advance to second.  Colie Sappingfield popped out to 3rd for the second out.  Dorian Shaw hit a single to center scoring both runs.  Amanda Chidester popped  out to SS to end the inning.

Louisville could not get anything going in the bottom of the 7th let alone the entire game.  The did have something going in the 4th but JT settled down and worked herself out of a jam.

Game time temperature was 65 degrees under a partly cloudy sky.

BTW;  Jr. SS Stephanie Kirkpatrick is out for the year following knee surgery the other day.  Amy Knapp has stepped up to the challenge and has done quite well.  (http://michigandaily.com/sports/knapp-make-shortstop-position-her-own-s…)

The team plays again right after the first game but I will be watching the MBB game so I will try to update the second game later.

Its great to be a Michigan Wolverine.....Go Blue
