Michigan SB mercies Lil' Sister 8-0

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Michigan Softball team is hosting Lil' sister tonight at Alumni Field.  Nicole Sappingfield is silently missing from the line up.  She injured her knee on the last play of the game last weekend.  A result from a collision for a fly ball.

Lindsay Doyle is batting in the #2 slot and defensively in LF.  Marley Powers takes Lindsay's DH position at the #8 slot.

Michigan comes into the weekend #2 in the nation.  ASU remains #1, and hosts #12 Stanford this weekend.  ASU won the first game of three today 3-1.

In the Big 10 race, Indiana won today 2-1 as they host Purdue this weekend.

UPDATE:  Michigan scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th for the mercy rule win.  Dorian Shaw was the offensive hero today going 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored, including the 2 run walk off in the 6th.  Amanda Chidester went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Caitlin Blanchard went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

JT was awesome on the rubber today for the shutout.  She had a perfect game going into the 5th inning.  She finished with 1 hit and 13 Ks with zero walks.  What a great time to get back on track from her rotator cuff injury.

Now all we need is Colie to come back next week.

Congrats to all the seniors.  Thank you so very much for all your dedication to Michigan and the sport of Softball.  You all will be missed very much.  Everyone here on MGoBlog wishes you all the success in the world after this season.

But first, lets win a NC.  Blue Dragon??????   Show us how its done.

Could anyone get the audio going on Mgoblue?  I have ended up watching the game tracker... How boring is that?  (Glad we're winning.)

...Michigan becomes the first program in conference history to win four straight Big Ten championships.

Some of the notes from the MGoBlue.com game story:

  • Michigan improved to 72-27 in the all-time series against Michigan State.
  • The Big Ten title is the 14th for the Wolverines in program history and the fourth in as many years. All 14 titles have come over the last 20 seasons. No program in conference history has won four consecutive titles.
  • Senior RHP Jordan Taylor matched a season best with 13 strikeouts. The double-digit strikeout performance was Taylor's 12th of the season and fifth in her last seven appearances.
  • Taylor notched her 40th career complete-game shutout to earn a share of the second spot among Michigan's all-time leaders in the category. She is tied with Sara Griffin (1995-98) and needs just three more to reach record holder Jennie Ritter (43, 2002-06).
  • Taylor also inched closer to Michigan's career records in wins and strikeouts -- both currently held by Ritter. With 104 career wins, Taylor needs just two more to match the program record (106), and with 1,175 career strikeouts, she needs 30 more Ks to reach Ritter's 1,205 standard.

Bama loses, Georgia lost to Longwood earlier in the week but advances to SEC Title game...it will be interesting.  UM could be the #1 ranked team but seeded anywhere btw 6-12 according to Hutch..based upon RPI...We will have the best record in the nation..if we beat MSU today we would be undefeated on the road..2/3 of our games would have been road or neutral sites..Weve already beaten ASU and AZ along wth many other top 40 teams..IF UM doesnt get a top 8 seed something is seriously wrong here..

as this years team had almost the same schedule as last year.  I would think we would be a top 8 team.   RPI is only one data point that the Tournament Committee looks at.  We will be fine.

Yes, but let's not go overboard, though.  We do not have "almost the same schedule as last year."

Last year, Michigan played 3 games against #1 Alabama, 1 game against #5 UCLA, 1 game against #6 Georgia, 1 game against #7 Texas, 1 game against #9 Missouri, 1 game against #10 Arizona and 1 game against #12 LSU.  That's 9 games against the top 12.  This year, Michigan will have 2 games against the top 12 (Arizona & Arizona State).

Also last year, Michigan played a total of 16 regular season games against teams in the top 25.  This year, Michigan will end up playing 4 games against teams in the top 25 (Arizona, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Houston).  This is not the same schedule as last year.

"almost".  The wins against Zona and ASU are key along with the best record in the country.  So there were less top 10 opponents this year but a quality win is a quality win.

We will be fine.   I would not be surprised if we did get the #2 National Seed nor would I be surprised if we received the #8 National Seed.  A seed #9-#12 would be suprising, but not unheard of.  However, anything below a #12 would be criminal.

The other advantage the we have is geography.  We are the only power-house in the North and East.  That accounts for something.  Although the selection criteria is not discussed, the fact that we dominate the region, certainly helps us.
