1. Penn State Series

(starts at 0:50)

Michigan has not tied in 37 days and now Dave is lonely. They have traded draws for splits! The Penn State series was mostly even with teams trading games where they had bad breakdowns. Michigan was the victim of some pretty bad puck luck on Saturday at MSG. The goalie sympathizer defends Hayden Lavigne and we discuss the dynamics of keeping a goalie warm during games. Penn State is fun and unusual, from a hockey sense, and they are appreciated. Michigan ends with a season split with games being mostly even.

2. Minnesota, Takes, and MSU

(starts at 24:08)

Michigan continues their rollercoaster ways with a split in Minneapolis. Minnesota is a flat team and Michigan made them look slow on Friday. Lavigne kept the team in it as the Gophers crept back into it on Friday and Boka put it away. We talk about the power play and special team woes that submarined a sweep on Saturday night, and discuss Quinn Hughes' magic and how he affects games and the team. Minnesota looked like a team who was getting used to a coach when we saw them in December and now they look like a team without any elite talent.

We also talk about where the team is now. Why is their defense not performing to expectations? Why are the special teams not up to par? Dave and Anthony share their frustrations on this front.

We also preview this coming weekend's series against Michigan State, who is now competent and not annoying to play.

This podcast was recorded right before the news that Michigan's leading goal scorer is out for the year after getting injured at the World Juniors. It was too late to add anything about it, and anyway it would have lost us our precious family rating despite the fact that David is constitutionally incapable of using swear words.

1. On Taking It Outside

starts at 0:50

Welcome back! We don’t really talk about the GLI because it wasn’t on TV!  Anthony does talk about the GLI’s impact on his Michigan fandom growing up and we lament how its reduced significance has affected fans in the area.
We talk about the outdoor game with Notre Dame, some zany goals because of the conditions, and how Michigan was the beneficiary of a rare goalie meltdown.  Outdoor games are hard to watch on TV but a blast in person and a great benefit to those who are able to attend, we discuss this and other nuances of the events.

2. What Happens in Vegas

starts at 20:55

avid sadly talks about the Merrimack loss while Anthony heaps praise on the Vegas Golden Knights in-game experience and how those intertwine.  How can Michigan lose to a team that in the 15-ish percentile when that is sandwiched by two top ten wins? We talk OSU, a series split on the road is great.  Michigan benefits from parity in the conference in this instance, although the pathway to parity has been a net negative but still welcomed considering where the conference was a few years ago.  How does Michigan beat two top-ten teams?  The trap! Anthony talks about this and other clever things the team is doing to get by this season.  What does Michigan have to do to make the tournament?

1. Kissing Your Brother (and a Loss) and Your Twin Sister (and a Loss)

starts at 0:50

The team didn't play badly against Michigan State and Minnesota but came away with just about the worst possible result given their effort. Team is constructed well, can't do more without more scoring liners. The draft picks are all concentrated on the blue line (and include Boka). Minnesota is odd because they're sorely in need of talent on D and have freshman forwards to spare.

2. Global

starts at 37:43

GLI and World Juniors are coming. A preview of the Michigan/other Big Ten players involved, plus some Red Wings draft picks. Canada is stacked this year--17 first or second round picks on that team. The U.S. has built a regular contender but medaling is hard enough this year. Hughes will be either the first pairing or the second-best defenseman and on the 1A pairing.

1. Stealing one from ND and the Penn State Comebacks

starts at 0:50

The Penn State series was a shootout that Michigan fought back in both third periods from dead. Defense was shaky but offense coming around. A good, old-fashioned shootout that split the series in a tough place to win against a good team. The first two weekends included three great 3rd period performances.

2. The Badger Hole and Hockeytakes

starts at 19:20

The Wisconsin series featured two ties and zero sister kisses, two 3v3 overtimes, and a very defensive posture from Michigan. Dominant in possession but meager on the scoreboard, the team played a very structured game designed to limit chances against, and they were mostly successful in that department. Bounces did not go their way hence the two ties. Anthony helps Dave settle a twitter disagreement about Friday's goal against.

Also the team is examined.  Discussions about the lineup and the goalie situation. Anthony praises Mel's system and coaching to date. Talk about the extra skater.

1. Recapping the Last Weeks

starts at 1:00

Michigan has played seven regular season games and two exhibitions, how are they doing? What have we seen when we have been able to see the games? Speaking of, we would like to be able to see more of the games, please fix this.

2. The State of the Team

starts at 21:03

We run down each group on the team and discuss while wondering if they are ahead or behind where we thought they would be. Top line and power play are looking great. Other parts have room to improve. Anthony the goalie makes the case the goalies are being scapegoated to an extent. (of course he does)

3. Sieves and the People Who Associate With Them

starts at 45:15

We talk about the Big Ten as league play kicks off! This league will be awesome this season. ND is up first, and along with OSU they don't look like they have missed a beat. Minnesota is working some things out. PSU and Wisconsin look like they might have found some goaltending, which will raise their ceilings significantly. MSU is competent once again, Danton Cole is turning things around there. Preseason prediction of all B1G teams in the top half of the NCAA is looking good.

4. We talk predictions!

starts at 1:00:06

Where will Michigan finish in the B1G? Can they make the tournament?

The Hosts: MGoHockey Correspondent David Nasternak and Person of Great Hockey Substance Anthony Ciatti

This Podcast Needs a Sponsor: We would like to do more of these—probably 10 episodes this season total if you're interested.

1. We Are Qualified

Welcome to the podcast! We introduce ourselves, talk about what we plan on doing this season, and generally set the table for this endeavor. We then dive into last season and how the team did, and overall expectations for this season.

2. Offense Preview

Michigan lost its entire first line and more than 50 goals. How will they replace this production? The Centers are strong, there is some talent on the wings, a couple promising freshmen, and many possibilities for a fourth line. Michigan will likely look to committee to replace the first line's production from last year.

3. Defense Preview

QUINN HUGHES!!! This is the strength of the team. The defense is skilled, experienced, and only replacing one player. We explore the potential 6th D and talk about what to expect from the rest of the returners. We also talk about Hughes because it is fun to. We touch on the goaltending, will be mostly the same but that can work with the quality of D and system the team has. Strauss Mann takes the stress off of having to get a 2020 goalie.

4. Sieves and Scumbags

We talk about how well the schedule sets up the first month of the season.  The conference will be tough, most teams are improved.  We also talk about season predictions.
