AGREED -and coaches are to blame. The Hoke administration is in the dark ages when it comes to developing and motivating their players. There is no fear of God (or Bo), no holding accountable to the team. As much as we made fun of Kelly these years, he bitched his players into disciplined machines. Big difference between Clappy Hoke and NDs defensive coordinator who screamed and fist pumped a dozen times when his boys blitzed. You think he' just clapping and giving stern instruction during practice? We have been a joke and our coaches never seem to want to turn our players into "killers". Not that hurting anyone is the goal, but you have to bring that MENTALITY just to be able to compete. Not even Gardner seems to get in his line's face and say WTF? If Novak were out there at QB, you think he'd put up with this line play for 3yrs. They can't even hold a millisecond of a max protect! The college game WILL officially become a business soon (and catch up to the Bamas and Oregons, who have been way ahead of the game), and players will be accountable much like professionals. If we want to compete at all, the "gentlemanly molding of young men" gloves have to come off and you sharpen these players' focus through fear. It is not incompatible with the goal of graduating educated men of character.

Self-blueing

I'm afraid I just blue myself...

Dusty here in my office...

Agreed.  So happy for J-Mo for staying and leading and making others better by example and he earned his hardware twice over!  Michigan Man Material.

OP reminded me how sad I was for Chris Hunter and Graham Brown who played their asses off as our big men in mid-2000s.  NIT was their fate, but they carried flag well for us.  I can see J-Mo off with clear eyes, full heart.

Pound for pound

maybe the best combo of power and speed I can recall at Michigan in the last 25 yrs.  Tho my favorite Wheatley moment was when he hurdled me for a dunk at CCRB in off season.  Balls to the face, yo.

On second recollection, my least favorite Wheatley moment...

"And now we know...

it's the Butler!  Here in Reliant!  With the [2011 NC trophy]!"

nigh be it for ME to quibble but...

"hoisted", do you mean?  a petard being a medieval incendiary, and those making them often were blown up (hoisted off the floor) by their own devices.

HOKIE beat me to it!!

well done, sir.

I share with you my unique indulgence

i've loved bourbon ever since my dad n his brothers used to give me sips when I was 2 yrs old at christmas so's i'd be easily induced to go "tackle the wall, kid" and pass out for their amusement...then they'd bet on which present would break first when launched off the porch.  true story.

but my favorite spirit is actually RYE whiskey, which speaks to me with a subtler sweetness and aroma.  hard to find, tho.  best one's i've had are Black Maple and Rittenhouse, but more easily found is Wild Turkey rye which is still lovely with or without a couple cubes.

go forth and surprise your friends with the wonders of rye.

tee hee!

....horse cork....

Wolv54 has it right....

The elder amongst us (and if '54 is his grad date....well...jeebus, i aint HALF that old) probably recognize the risk of this transition turning into a coaches carousel and project success more long term.  I'm as big a fan as anyone, wearing 'the colors' on my sleeve everywhere i go (i went to a Frank Caliendo show in vegas - it sucked, fyi - and his band did a cowbell diddy...i shouted Go Blue from the balcony....there was one chuckle across the theatre).  as much as i hate the shit i get from everyone here in Cali, i have to trust that Martin got the best hire he could at the time (let's not forget that he HAD to hire someone...it wasn't a matter of positioning for LeBron), trust RichRod's success rate, and trust the development of players.  Its like building a business....profitability may take years.  i give it 5 yrs before discussing whether his is a failed system for Michigan.  as wolv54 said, what's the alternative?   even bringing Saban in (likely) wont result in instant Big Ten championship.  My only concern is whether Martin's gamble on the spread offense will pay off.  did it have its day and is now gone (danielson) OR is it a long term points machine...  i mean, if P Johnson can keep the wishbone alive in this day and age, i have to believe that RR's spread can evolve with the times to bear out his past success rate.  that is all.

get off the lawn you kids and your newfangled instant gratifications and your drivin of maseratis at 21 with your bling and pimp cups and Cristal-filled plastic cups...!!!

Seriously, how come ND avoids this kind of scrutiny?? agreed that this is tabloid journalism based on someone naming a deep pocket in the hopes of squeezing some money out of a passive investor. Sorry to insert this off-topic, but I can't start a new topic (stoopid points, LOL): ND now starts winter workouts at 5am, should there be any investigation into the propriety of THAT? Even if it turns out they're within the "hours per day/week", there must be a rule about when practices can take place. I mean, is it permissible for a coach to conduct practice at 3am? Midnight? If 5am is fine, then so be it. Sorry to instigate, but for the media to pillory Michigan without investigating other representative BCS schools' compliance with the "rules" really frustrated me. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-notredame-kelly
any class sounds better than being stuck to a chair 15 yrs later completely unmotivated to draft a brief persuading the Federal Circuit that, no, we are not barred from using the doctrine of equivalents to establish infringement, k thks...
I took it as a compliment.... every time one of those Sparty girls (females! not the hockey team) spoke of us Wolverine dudes' prowess with the wunder-boner. They should be thanking US!! [i'm so ashamed for stooping to blue humor]
Why, Thank You, els179! It's nice to see that SOMEONE believes that we'll score 14pts one of these weeks....
"Mike Martin greatest DT since Sliced Bread"

That would be totally sweet!!  IIRC, Sliced Bread was a terror at DT, often sandwiching quarterbacks a half dozen times a game!   Running backs were toast!  Let's not forget that game against ND when he grilled Brady Cheese on successive plays.  I just Wonder rye we haven't been able to recruit someone of the same mold since him.  Here's to Martin spreading his buttery justice over the nooks and crannies of our cupcake non-conf opponents!
