2 years 26 weeks ago I'm a footy player

I have played footy (Australian Rules Football) here in the states since 2007, been a member and vice-captain of the US national team, and have traveled twice to Australia to represent the USA in international competition.

For an Australian, the first instinct would be to pick up the ball, not to "soccer" (kick) it off the ground. When US people, especially those who are former soccer players, learn to play footy, they will try to kick the ball off the ground, but this is usually highly dangerous and only permitted in play when there is absolutely no one around you. The Aussies yell at us all the time about breaking that habit. If others are attempting to get the ball and you kick it off the ground it is considered a pentalty and the other team is awarded posession of the ball. An Australian, who has been playing footy all their life would instinctually go to pick up the ball and then either handball it off to another team mate if he was in traffic or put it to the boot and kick it. Even if you have just picked up the ball and you are immediately tackled, you are deemed to have no prior opportunity to dispose of the ball and it would be a ball up (ref comes in and throws the ball in the air and the two ruck men try to tap it to their teammates). It wouldn't be an instinct for them to necessarily fall on the ball because it is part of live play, it isn't whistled dead like in American football. It would be instinctual to pick it up and do something with it

4 years 21 weeks ago I grew up a Michigan fan in

I grew up a Michigan fan in Ohio too. Granted, those were the Cooper years so we had the upper hand. My fandom came from my dad taking me to at least one Michgian home game every year. It was THE event of the fall for me as a kid. We would arrive in Ann Arbor early Saturday to get good parking near the stadium, walk downtown go to Steve and Barry's, go to my uncle's tailgate, watch the Marching Band march to the stadium, go to the game early for the band pre-game show, get a pop during the game so we could have the plastic take-home cup with the schedule on it, and drive back home listening to the post-game radio. Kids don't need lots of swag, I was perfectly content to have my cup and a t-shirt.

There is nothing like a football game-day experience to build fandom, but since you are in Toledo, you could easily come up for a hockey game, baseball game, soccer game..etc. Show him there is more to Michigan than just football (I know, crazy, right?). If your child is athletic, you could also see if there are any summer sports camps he could attend as he gets older. I came to the summer swim camp and stayed in West Quad for a week in middle school and high school. That was a great way to see Ann Arbor in the summer and get to know the town and school better. You could also come up and see some of the student plays and shows if that's your thing as well. There is also the exhibits at the Natural History Museum. Good luck!

Running over to student section definitely began in the RR era. He told the players to go over and sing the victors with the students to celebrate the win.

Go with the twitters. It's better for those not in front of the computer. I'm usually in the stadium and would like to participate / share photos, etc.

5 years 41 weeks ago Dog Park North of the City

Try the Olson dog park out on DhuVarren Rd. just past Pontiac Trail (need to drive there). We've been going there for a while and never have encountered anyone from the city, but "legally" you do need a license. There is regular park next to the dog park there that in the winter is rarely used. Lots of bikers in the summer, so careful about letting the dog off leash then.

Steer clear of letting your dog off leash in the Arb, at least during the spring/summer/fall, you will be told to put it back on a leash by someone as Ann Arborites never fail to let you know what you are doing wrong. Winter is a different story because not many people venture out there in the cold/snow.

There are plenty of regular parks around, just takes a bit of exploring.

6 years 12 weeks ago trial example

Correct with the Bayesian therory, however, when you are a juror you must presume the defendant is innocent (or are at least instructed to do so) until proven guilty by the prosecution; thus, in reality you should start out 0/100 until evidence and argument is heard.  Just sayin'...

6 years 19 weeks ago Unfortunatley, you jump to

Unfortunatley, you jump to incorrect conclusions. I grew up in Ohio, so YES I know that Ohio is different from OSU.  The difference is OhioU, as everyone from Ohio calls it, has little to no presence in the state.  It is dominated by OSU, so much so that people wear OSU gear to the OhioU football games.  If VT people see us saying beat Virginia, they will just laugh and think we are idiots.  It won't bother them in the least, infact they may relish it because they have been the king of football in the state of Virginia for ages.  I can't remember the last time UVA beat VT.  VT has huge presence in the state of Virginia in general.  The best part of saying Beat Ohio is that is means something (going back to Woody and TSUN) and it pisses OSU people off.  It does not carry the same weight with VT, so there is no point and we just look stupid.

6 years 19 weeks ago Just no.

Beat Virginia doesn't work because Virginia is UVa, not Virginia Tech.  Very very different.  UVa even sells car stickers that are"Virginia" while all things Virginia Tech are VT.  Having lived in Virginia it makes a very big difference.

6 years 29 weeks ago I play Aussie Rules in the US

We acutally have Nationals next weekend in Austin, Tx.  There used to be a team in Detroit, but they went inactive awhile ago.  There are around 40 mens teams and 10 womens teams.  Check out usafl.com.

7 years 1 week ago Legacy like whoa.

I'm the 25th member of my family to attend Michigan, going back to great-grandparents.  My paternal great-grandfather graduated with an engineering degree from Michigan in 1918 and, remarkably, my great-grandMOTHER graduated with her masters in english and latin in the early 1920s.  My grandfather was a third string fullback for the wolverines back in the day.  My parents met at UM, married here, and then moved to Ohio for my dad's job.  I was raised a Michigan fan in Ohio during the Cooper years, so at least I won all the bets on games, although I received crap all the time from OSU fans.  I still remember my third grade teacher asking me in front of the entire class why I was wearing a michigan sweatshirt to school and telling me to take it off.  This adversity made me and my brother extremely fanatical because we had to be on top of our game at all times to trump OSU fans.  My parents have had season tickets for 40 years and I've been attending football games since I was 6.  I had to miss my first game when I was 5 because I had the chicken pox (thought this was the end of the world, but it made for a good admissions essay). You better believe my kids will be brought up blue, even though the fiance is a state fan (has degrees from both state and UM), because who has season tickets?? This girl!  Go blue!

8 years 45 weeks ago marshmallows

The key to throwing marshmallows was to suck on one end before throwing it so they stuck on your target. Will never forget one UM v. OSU game where there was one OSU fan in my student section; he was totally coated in marshmallows. priceless

9 years 4 weeks ago SPSS

SPSS is archaic, but hard to mess up if you know what statistical tests you need to run and how to interpret them. I'd recommend SAS version 9.2, which you have access to as a student. Can be purchased for $40 (student price) at the union if you have a PC. SAS is the standard statistical analysis tool.
