If you're in town for just the evening, there's more than enough to do/see downtown. I don't recommend Mexicantown or New Center. Use the Qline to traverse Woodward to downtown.
Bakersfield, Grey Ghost, Vertical (my favorite), Wright & Co., Hudson Cafe, the Whitney, Chartreuse, DIA Cafe, Parc, Townhouse, Caucus Club.
These places may be very busy, so consider a reservation if you have kids. Enjoy!
