Of note, Don Canham, the legendary athletic Director of Michigan, who is credited for many of the great achievements of the University of Michigan, died of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Like so much in life,…

Like so much in life, mindset is everything.

I would  posit that this is the true difference in the team, the last three years versus the team previously.

Positive leadership is contagious, which is why I predict that JJ will be a great quarterback in the NFL, despite his physical limitations.

Every last one! Haha

Every last one! Haha

Exactly! But why? I’m not…

Exactly! But why? I’m not sure what sort of primitive parts of our brain seem to lead us to engage in that sort of behavior.

And we continue to engage in it, despite the fact that we all KNOW we shouldn’t and even if we don’t. we all KNOW that we are going to be judged harshly by it.

Good points! I wasn’t even…

Good points! I wasn’t even thinking of coaches or leaders. I was thinking of just the group mentality that somehow seems to be sort of our human experience. Is there some part of our primitive brain that is trying to test to see if people are worthy members of the tribe or pack? I don’t know.

Jimmy John’s has the best…

Jimmy John’s has the best lettuce wrapped subs. Not sure how they teach their crew to wrap the meat all up in lettuce so well.

Jersey Mike’s also does good low carb option, but in a bowl.

Question for the MGoPsych…

Question for the MGoPsych folks.

What is the explanation as to why we, as humans, and especially as men, tend to continue to gravitate towards hazing-type activities?

I played sports through college and am a physician, so I should probably have a better understanding, but why do groups continue to have members of the group?

Second prominent person this…

Second prominent person this year to die of this issue. Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode had the same issue.

Don Canham also died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. His was after a car crash.

I’m the owner of a small…

I’m the owner of a small business that employs just under 50 people. We have definitely had weird stuff happening. Here is an example. One employee who wanted to quit to be a “dog mom” and then the day after she quit, she somehow realized that being a dog mom wouldn’t pay her bills. 🤷‍♂️

overall, however, the “great resignation” has been great for us. Before Covid, we serendipitously were starting a company culture overhaul that forced us to weed out a few bad apples, but overall, we have been more stable than ever before.

One point: Sweden has still…

One point: Sweden has still not locked down. My son lives there and he said it is totally normal. No changes to their daily lives at all.

??????? totally agree

??????? totally agree

Actually, as a surgeon, I…

Actually, as a surgeon, I can tell you that there is absolutely zero evidence that wearing a mask protects the patient. There are multiple studies that demonstrate that the only advantage of wearing a mask is to protect the wearer of the mask. In fact, this is the reason why we wear masks in the operating room, to prevent us from getting exposed to any thing from the patient. In the UK, the standard practice is for surgeons and other operating room staff to not wear a mask.

I don’t say this to make a statement that we should not wear masks for COVID-19. I support wearing masks.

interestingly, in the operating room, wearing a hairnet, not a mask, has been proven to decrease surgical site infections.

I second this twice and also add “Girl on a Train.”  Suspenseful and fun.

Thanks for the recommendation about the course, “Building Great Sentences.”  I definitely love to her recommendations like this one.

Haha!

No troll, just…

Haha!

No troll, just stating my thoughts. I will be at the game and think we will light them up big time. However, the last decade or more has taught me to be reserved in my approach to these games.

It has been the only way I’ve been able to deal with the disappointment.

Haha! ?

Thank you. This is…

Haha! ?

Thank you. This is a good lesson for allow of us to remember—especially on the Sabbath.

Setting aside J Franklin’s…

Setting aside J Franklin’s weird tweet, I think that this game has the potential to be very tough for us. The team this year seems to have the maturity and attitude to avoid a post bye week letdown, but it is still a concern. I hope the team does not come out flat (see Texas versus Ok State yesterday) and, once again, turn our collective joy into suffering.

I think we either lose in a way similar to how we lost to ND or we blow them out.

Thanks for the…

Thanks for the recommendation! Will definitely check it out.

I love podcasts and…

I love podcasts and Audible. Below are some of my favorites. Most of my interests have to do with history, especially with World War I and the Middle East.  Elation to many of the books listed below, many of the classics in business and language have been great to listen to on Audible, such as the E-Myth, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Paul Collins language learning (I have done French, Spanish, Swedish, and German), Crucial Conversations, Start with Why.

For podcasts,

  • Hardcore History
  • This American Life
  • Serial
  • Startup
  • Homecoming
  • Planet Money
  • History of England
  • Crimetown

Audible Books

  • Endurance. Great book about Shackleton.
  • Guns of August. About the start of WWI.
  • Girl on the Train. Fiction story that is much better than the film.
  • Lawrence in Arabia. Amazing life of TE Lawrence with information about WWI in the Middle East. Gives good insight into many of the problems of the past fifty years.
  • Washington: A Life. Inspiring and amazing bio.
  • Hamilton. The inspiration behind the musical.
  • The Fall of the Ottomans. Story of the fall of the empire and provides background on the current Middle East.
  • Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, Bin Laden from the Soviet Invasion to 2011.
  • Directorate S. About the Pakistani secret service.
  • Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner.
  • Anything by Erik Larson

Hearing this news from…

Hearing this news from Maryland immediately made me think about the Notre Dame situation. I am a physician and, although Maryland should have clearly done a better job by taking steps to minimize the risks to its players, the body and its response to stressors, is an inexact science.  Really crappy, inexplicable things happen every single day in the medical world.  In most of these situations, there is very little that could’ve been done to anticipate or prevent a bad outcome from occurring.

In contrast, the Notre Dame situation, as I understand it, was completely preventable. The coaches decided, for some reason, that obtaining further film of their practice was more important for the safety of the student on the lift.

I don’t know how Notre Dame got a pass on that situation.

Great take. My thoughts…

Great take. My thoughts exactly!

Thank you. Finally, a voice…

Thank you. Finally, a voice of reason.

We are all upset that we lost, but we lost to a team ranked higher than us on the road at night.

What makes Michigan fans different from other teams, like Ohio State, is that we can maintain dignity, sportsmanship, and decency—even after a loss that hurts.

A loss at the beginning of the year is thankfully not at tough to recover from as a loss later in the year.

Hang in there. We will be fine.

Some books that I have…

Some books that I have enjoyed

Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman is a great book about WWI. The audiobook was amazing with an incredible narration.

Lawrence in Arabia is a recent biography about TE Lawrence. Helps give perspective about how we got to where we are today in the Middle East.

Endurance is an incredible book about Shackleton and offers great inspiration about leadership and perseverance.

The Fall of the Ottomans is a great book that illustrates the factors involved with today’s Middle East. Good description of  the Armenian genocide.

Devil in the White City or anything by Erik Larson is good.

Richard Rhodes books are also all great. My favorite is the Making of the Atomic Bomb.

Hamilton by Ron Chernow is amazing

Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow is even better than Hamilton. It inspired Chernow to write the bio about Hamilton.

Fiction

Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner

Girl on a Train. Much better than the movie!

The Alchemist

Classy We may not have as many wins as Ohio State in the recent past, but we can at least (usually) claim to have classier fans. This post does not belong on a Michigan site.
I'm so glad dantoni isn't going anywhere I am looking forward to Michigan completely destroying sparty on Saturday. However, this year is not enough! I've been a little worried that Dantonio would leave for another, better job and we would have to hear a lifetime of state fans claiming that we would have consistently lost to them if Dantonio stayed. This suck fest of the season will ensure Dantonio isn't leaving this year and will hopefully allow him be around for a long time for us to demolish them each year.
I'm so glad dantoni isn't going anywhere I am looking forward to Michigan completely destroying sporty on Saturday. However, this table illustrates why I am so glad sporty is having a bad year this year.
Oregon State defensive coordinator went to BYU Just one point of minor clarification. Oregon State's DC, Kalani Sitake, left to be the head coach at BYU, not Utah State. Utah State's head coach is Matt Wells, who was the OC when Gary Anderson was there.
I liked both of these I liked both of these ads from Mercedes and Jaguar. http://youtu.be/Vi08c_siQys
Get used to it Get used to it Zeke. Coach Harbaugh isn't going anywhere and you're going to be even more tired of hearing about him when your team starts losing to us again!
Yes, it's life threatening

Yes, it is life threatening. He has a chance, but statistically speaking, he can still make it, Survival is better if it is related to HPV rather than alcohol and tobacco use.

Stage IV is not good

I'm an MGoDoctor and did a residency in this field (otolaryngology--head and neck surgery) at UM. Stage IV is bad. Statistically speaking, his chances are not good. He may be lucky and make it, but even if he does, he will likely have some nasty side effects, such as difficulty eating, speaking, etc.

Hearing this just plain sucks. I haven't always been a big Mort fan, but instances like this help remind us that, no matter what team we cheer for, we are all human and in the same boat. A good reminder for us all to be civil and respectful to everybody.

Prayers and well wishes to Mort, his family, and loved ones.

Maize pants!!! Maize pants!!!
Band Music

Any MGoMusicFans, MGoDrumMajors, or MGoConductors out there? If so, do any of you  know if there is some sort of story behind the Oregon band's choice of music after a big play? Although I find it amusing, "Augie's Great Municipal Band" from Star Wars I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAs7Wxvc1_o) is annoying and not music that I would EVER want my band playing! Thoughts? Please discuss and inform!

10?

I don't really care where we finish, but am just glad to have finished this season on a high note with hope for the future instead of a winter of depression. Having said that, I think we will be at 10, but am REALLY hoping to have a little chuckle if we somehow finish one spot ahead of STAEE! Either way, I think we are in line for a great position for a preseason ranking somewhere in the 5-10 range, which is a perfect location for a shot at the playoff!

They should...but they won't. They should...but they won't.
Those students don't go to Utah. They go to... Those students don't go to Utah. They go to either Utah Valley University (until recently, a community college) or BYU-Idaho (until recently, a junior college)
Sparty:UM :: BYU:Utah Just to sort out the football and sporting dynamics in Utah, BYU is Utah's version of Sparty. They burn fewer couches, but are just as annoying!
Non fiction books I second "Endurance" about Shackleton.

"The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuckman is a great history of the history of the beginnings of WWI. Those European monarchs were crazy and we are still paying for their mistakes!

"The Big Short" by Michael Lewis is an interesting explanation of part of the reason for the recent economic recession.

"The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes is a detailed history of the science behind nuclear fission and the associated military history. Rhodes is one of the best authors and his autobiography is one of the saddest and most inspiring books I've read.

Salt Lake City is amazing! I moved from Ann Arbor to Salt Lake five years ago and love it here. The outdoor activities are second to none. I don't know of anywhere else that allows you to be in the mountains actually doing what you want to do in the mountains, e.g., mountain biking, trail running, or skiing in 10-15 minutes. The food scene is nice with high quality restaurants. If you are coming, spend Friday at snowbird or in park city. Ride the tram at snowbird or bicycle the Wasatch back trail. On Saturday, go and enjoy college football that starts with BIG games at 10 am! I can't wait for Harbaugh and Michigan to visit!
MRI

If you want to complain about MRI scans, blame the state of Michigan. They actually have a law that requires ct and MRI scanners to be approved by the state before they are purchased. It's the only state I am aware of that has this requirement. As a result, getting a scan scheduled in Michigan takes longer than other states (except Ontario!).

Killed me! So much wanted Utah State to pull it off.

Killed me!  So much wanted Utah State to pull it off.  There are a lot of Aggies in AA!
