The British withdrew from the American colonies because--and it may hurt for the more patriotic among us to hear this--the American colonies were relatively small potatoes for them. The constant push for expansion beyond the Appalachians on the part of the colonists, and the conflicts with Native populations this caused, made it pain in the ass to administer given the revenue the colonies generated. The real imperial money-makers were the Indian colony they were locking down and, within a decade or so, shoving opium down China's throat. There was also the ongoing cold war with France, and the fact that the French only supported the revolution to encourage a protracted war that drained Britain's coffers meant that, at the end of the day, it just wasn't worth it for them.
The work of Nehru and Gandhi, plus the war debt from WW II and the cost of rebuilding. And for the ordinary British citizen there was little taste for continuing maintenance of a distant massive colony, given the resistance in that colony and the cost of maintaining an administration.
They were the favorite band of an old friend of mine (r.i.p. Ed), so I saw them perform it live. Saw The Reverend Horton Heat and the Sex Pistols at the same show. I was really there for the Pistols, but the Dropkicks are a great band
I love what the Giants did. Nabers is now the #1 receiver. Tyler Nubin from Minnesota fills a need, and he should bring superior instincts and toughness to a safety spot, and Andru Phillips should start at the nickel corner. Theo Johnson should be an effective pass catching TE to replace the eternally injured Darren Waller. Tyrone Tracy Jr. will probably be limited to kick returning but they really needed skill there too. The 6th pick is a UCLA linebacker who's probably a training squad guy. But the Giants picked five players who could potentially start next year.
EVERTON WINS! Everton avoids relegation. Everton is a Prem team again next season! Dyche gets a lot of crap, but this team faced A LOT this season: the points deduction, the 777 takeover disaster, maybe ANOTHER point deduction looming. So this does feel good. The deck was stacked against them. Obviously beating Liverpool in the Merseyside derby was huge. Oh, and I'll have a Baconator and a large fries...
