Women's BB Team Improves to 9-1 after Surviving Scare from Detroit

Submitted by Raoul on

The Michigan women's basketball team survived a scare from Detroit tonight to pull out a 61-51 road victory. The Wolverines had led by as many as 19 in the second half before a late run by the Titans cut the lead to 2 (52-50) with 3:15 to go. Michigan then finished the game on a 9-1 run to secure the victory.

Michigan was led by Jenny Ryan, who had a great all-around game with 9 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals. The scoring leaders for the team were Kate Thompson with 16 and Rachel Sheffer with 14.

The victory avenges Michigan's loss to the Titans last year—and more importantly keeps their tournament resume free of "bad" losses. The team next travels to EMU for a Sunday road game at 2:00 pm. The Eagles beat Michigan in the first round of the WNIT last year, so revenge week continues. On paper, EMU figures to be a tougher matchup than Detroit was, as the Titans' record is now 1-8 while EMU is 4-2 and recently took Michigan State to overtime before losing 60-59.

We were the better team in the EMU game last year. I don't know what happened though, they played the worst I had ever seen them play. It was a tough loss.
