Submitted by elhead on

This is one hell of a conversation between Thomas Wilcher, Fred Jackson and Jamie Morris. Jaimo hits a home run today.

While it blows what happened to Weber and Roquan Smith, it's hard to get on the high horse as a UM fan, when we've done similar in the past...most recently with Wilton Speight.

In a Nyquil haze in another thread I posted the incorrect info and was negged to hell (quite correctly).  However, I knew this had happened to Speight because I remember reading a quote from Speight's mom -- which I cannot find for the life of me -- who wasn't so happy with how it went down.

That said here's what happened.  Borges was Speight's lead recruiter and Speight had a close relationship with him.  Some in the previous thread asserted that Speight should have known a change was coming since everyone knew that Borges was getting fired.  But keep in mind as late as December Hoke was on record saying that there would be no changes to the staff.  It was not a foregone conclussion that Borges was getting fired.

Wilton was an Early Enrolee and signed/enrolled on Jan 6th.  Two days later UM announced Borges firing.  It is highly unlikely the firing was first contemplated on Jan 7th.

Dec 2   Hoke stating no coaching changes

Jan 6th  Wilton Enrolls Early   (Along with other O-players Canteen, Harris, and Cole)

Jan 8th Borges Fired  (first day of class for Wilton, Canteen, Harris and Cole)

Wilton Did Not Know - Article indicating Wilton didn't know it was coming.

Are you forgetting that Borges was canned for a wretched performance and everyone knew it was coming, while Drayton was not anywhere near being canned nor allowing the idea of him leaving OSU to get out.

It's one thing to say to recruits "I'll be here", like Borges and hope you won't get fired. It's a whole another can of worms and classlessness when you tell recruits you'll be there and your blatantly lying to them an their families. But hey, whatever to make you sleep better at night.

I don't disagree that Drayton was lying.  But UM was deceiving by ommission at best.  See the links above.  Despite Borges' perfromance Hoke was publicly declaring he wasn't making any coaching staff changes (you'd have to assume he was saying the same privately to the recruits).

Borges gets fired on the 8th and Nuss gets hired the same day.  This kind of hiring and firing doesn't take place in a day.  There's a much longer ramp into the announcement.   So you have to assume this plan was in motion -- it's clear from the Speight quotes he was not told.  So like I said it deception by omission instead of flat out lying.

If you believe that Hoke was behind both the firing of Borges and the hiring of Nuss you'd be right. But I don't think he was-I think Brandon forced both moves on Hoke so when he said no moves were coming I think he was telling the truth as he knew it.
