Submitted by jplwhite on December 6th, 2023 at 7:09 PM

Opponent: Toledo

Result: Loss, 69-46

Date:  12/6, Away

Starters: Laila Phelia, Cam Williams, Elise Stuck, Jordan Hobbs, Lauren Hansen (same as last game)

Injuries/inactives: none

  • Sollom dressed but did not play
  • Brown and T. Woodson did not play until 2 minutes left in the game

Offense:

  • Passes going down low to Cam Williams early
    • Assist from Hobbs for layup
    • Got tied up, possession Toledo
  • Missing open shots, started 2-9 on shooting until back to back baskets by Phelia and Cam Williams late in the first quarter. After a Phelia miss, Brett followed with an open three from the top of the key to cut the lead to just three at the end of the first quarter.
  • Noveroske blocking shots down low, 3 blocks in the first half
  • Hansen had a nice drive where she caught one of their other bigs (Garcia) out too far and then got past her with speed for a short jumper
  • Phelia with a nice drive and layup off the high glass to open the second half
    • Followed a minute later with a drive where she picked up the foul from Noveroske
    • Scored 9 in the third quarter before the media timeout
  • Toledo stayed stuck on shooters all game, preventing three point shots. Michigan shot 3-14 from three.

Defense:

  • Stuck got stuck down low and let Lockett have an open three for their first bucket
    • Toledo getting open threes in general off screens, shooting 3-7 from deep in the first quarter
  • Lockett took over the start of the second quarter, scoring 9 straight points, pushing Toledo out to a 12 point lead.
  • Toledo passing the ball well, passing up open shots for  even more open shots and Michigan not recovering well
  • Brett went to the bench with 3 fouls in the first half, unfortunately also the only Michigan player to have made a three up to that point
  • Toledo scored 38 points in the first half, the most for them in a first half all season.
  • 1-2-2 press in third and fourth quarters
    • Broken three times
    • Trapped a player with a triple team, Toledo called timeout

Notable stats:

  • Michigan shot 18-52 (35%) from the field and 3-14 (21%) from three
  • Quinesha Lockett finished with 20 points and 4 assists
  • Phelia finished with 16 points and 4 turnovers.
    • So far this season she is averaging 15.4 points per game on 34.2% shooting, both lower than last year’s averages. She is averaging 1.6 turnovers, 0.7 better than last year.
  • Michigan committed 19 turnovers and 21 fouls to 12 turns and 17 fouls from Toledo
  • The highest Michigan scored in any quarter was 16 points, with a low of 7 in the second quarter

Overall:

  • On a night when Phelia was the only player to score in double digits, Michigan couldn’t get anything going against white-hot three point shooting from Toledo and a loud home atmosphere. Michigan committed too many fouls, too many turnovers, and missed too many shots. Hopefully they can learn from this early season loss.

Miscellaneous:

  • Last year, Toledo handed Michigan its first loss of the season by 3 points as a raucous group of Toledo visitors easily made it seem like a Toledo home game at Crisler. This year’s roster had some turnover with a couple of seniors having graduated (King, Jansen), four freshmen having arrived (Swedlund, Weaver, Dykstra, Fegan), and a transfer from Rhode Island (Rinat). However, their starting lineup is identical to last year. Here are the starters with their current academic year:
    • #2 Sophia Ward (5th year) Guard
    • #5 Quinesha Lockett (5th year) Guard, Wooden and Naismith watch lists
    • #22 Khera Goss (Senior) Guard
    • #33 Sophia Mikonowicz (Senior) Guard/Forward
    • #34 Jessica Cook (Junior) Forward
  • Toledo sold out their arena and did a white out. (did a white out? What is the correct verb here?) Noise was evident on the broadcast, definitely a factor.
  • Toledo won the MAC tournament and went to March Madness last year as a 12-seed, beating 5-seed Iowa State in the first round and losing to 4-seed Tennessee in the round of 32.
  • Subs coming in quickly again. Taylor Williams, Chyra Evans, Greta Kampschroeder, and Elissa Brett all came in before the first media timeout.

laila is really scuffling right now.  it reminds me of a stretch that hailey brown had during her senior season, where she just looked...off, for a few weeks.  she's still getting it done on the defensive end, and i'm glad she's still shooting - despite her struggles there were a few stretches where she seemed to be the only one playing with any aggression.

hobbs in particular seemed to shrink, and taylor williiams never got going.  even elise stuck - normally a hustle player, if nothing else - seemed about three steps slower than normal.  which is also weird - these are veteran players who've played in hostile environments before.

toledo is really good - i was super-impressed with them last season; they flat-out beat us in that one, and this one was never really in doubt. they're really well coached.  that said, everything was falling, whether they were "good" shots or not.  at a certain point you just throw your hands up and shrug it off.

i just don't know what's happening with the shooting.  we've got some good shooters, but we go into these team-wide funks where nobody seems to be able to get into rhythm.  it's really weird.

I was at this game, great home crowd and quite a big deal to also be televised.

Glad to see the Rockets get the win.  I'm always a little torn when these two meet, except in football.

For all of Coach K's success in turning this program around & making it a consistent 20+ game winner, certain bad habits have always remained. The most glaring is turnovers. Coach K's teams just don't value the ball/possessions like you would expect given how hard they practice & how well Coach K & her staff are respected for teaching fundamentals. Next, elite athleticism. Naz was a warrior, once in a blue moon player, but getting good basketball players who are exceptional athletes has not happened for a program that can boast NCAA tournaments appearances now on the regular. That lack of talent is what shows up in games like tonight where players just can't stay in front of good guards or even quick forwards. Oh, they need a player or two with Naz's fire.

Woof. Toledo beat Michigan soundly and earned it from start to finish. They passed, cut into the lane, attacked closeouts, and shot well. If there was any leftover doubt that it was just not going to be Michigan’s night, two banked threes and a prayer of a layup falling for and and-1 erased it all.

Foul trouble forced a number of disjointed lineups for Michigan. It felt like none of Phelia/Hobbs/Kampschroeder could get the offense moving when subbed into the 1 spot for Hansen. The team just never got going on either end of the floor. With the exception of some nice paint moves from Williams/Williams/Evans, they couldn’t generate anything consistently on offense. They just seemed shellshocked and flat.

Gotta regroup and hope to steal one in Champaign on Sunday.
