Way OT - Father Still Needs a Kidney, but this is about The Player & The Fan
Hi guys,
Awhile ago I put up a post about how my father-in-law needs a kidney. Some people reacted negatively, but the positive responses I got filled my heart with warmth and led to some great advice / connections.
Since that time I've been continuing to spread the word in every way I can, including asking people on Twitter with large followings to get the word out (with a decent bit of success). Today, I asked well-known reporter Angelique Chengelis, who immediately helped. But that's not why I'm writing this...
I'm writing this post because The Player & The Fan (a podcast by Chris Howard and Glenn Higgins) immediately responded to Angelique's Tweet and offered up a signed Harbaugh jersey and Ohio State tickets to anybody whoever gets my father-in-law a kidney.
Help find this guy a kidney and you get jersey and my Ohio State tickets.. pic.twitter.com/xY3OZovOiK

I'm kind of speechless right now and I just want to express my appreciation for being part of such a wonderful fanbase and community that is so generous. I feel like joining the Michigan community (from Philly) was the best choice I ever made.
Go Blue!

Wishing your father-in-law all the best!
Thank you!
I'm an organ donor but good luck with these kidneys...
Man may the lord bless you and your family and I hope he gets a kidney tonight! I cannot say why this hits me so hard but let’s just say I can relate. Kidney disease is fatal if it goes untreated. Praying for his healing as well as your family. GO BLUE!
congrats! now all you have to do is search in quotes for whoever used the phrase “man I’d give a kidney for osu tickets”
...
on second thought the internet is only SO old
*starts typing in Google search*
Oh wait, he was making a joke.
*changes search and watches Burke's 3 vs. Kansas for the millionth time instead*
My wife listed in 2 states and got a type O kidney from an anonymous O living donor in Minny after 6 years waiting on dialysis. It was her 3rd offer (first two fell through). He should list in another state if he hasn't yet. You're doing a good thing, getting more visibility. I guess Twitter is good for something.
It's not hopeless though, more people are donating, it's never enough, and dialysis sucks, but just hang in there and good luck to him. Type O is tougher (need O kidney), but the paired donation is a great thing.
You can list in multiple states? How does that work?
It was a while ago but she was able to list in two states, she chose MN (U of Minn), and the wait is shorter there than Mich. The surgeon was top notch. He should talk to his hospital team, they should be able to counsel. Or try Natl Kidney Foundation. We tried to list in Ohio but our insurance was a problem, cuz Ohio sucks. The issue is that you need to travel there ASAP when called, and stay local for about 3-4 weeks after transplant. She flew there once and the donor died en route, losing the organ. With a living donor it’s more straightforward, it’s all scheduled.
Thank you for letting me know. I'll check with them if that's an option.
Fun fact - he's registered at UPenn and they are now able to take Hep C positive kidneys from corpses and transplant them WITHOUT the disease spreading to the recipient.
That’s just fantastic. This fan base and the people on this board are pretty awesome but you’re a pretty awesome son in law as well.
I appreciate it. Just doing what I can.
If it’s dire, why not offer a decent sum of money ? I bet $10,000 would get people interested. Is that legal ? If so just increase the money till someone agrees.
It was made illegal a few years ago. You can offer inducements like travel and lodging (i.e. mitigate the costs of being a donor), but you can't straight up pay for an organ.
I'm not sure it would even be legal for ME to offer a signed jersey and OSU tickets.
That’s messed up. What’s the logic for making it illegal ? And I guess if it doesn’t get dire, maybe find a place in the world where organs can be purchased ?
