Wanted - Web developer for MGoArchive

Submitted by MGoArchive on

Hello -

I'm looking for a web developer to assist in a project that builds off a bit of work I've done in the past.

MGoVideo has pivoted and will no longer be posting full game torrents of Michigan games. While TenYardTracker has a rather comprehensive torrent listing, including a 720p release, however there is a multitude of media that believe would be better suited for a standalone site; Inside Michigan Football, ESPN specials, etc. (This is where I'll be contributing, I have a bit of experience in this)

The distribution method for this material will use a familiar protocol (Bittorrent) but in a slightly different manner. I see a tremendous amount of promise in a new free tool named 'Sync' - http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync/get-started.html

Sync generates a secret 32-character key for a shared folder; this key can then be passed and distributed amongst a community. One of the nice aspects this method of distribution is that unlike the traditional bittorrent model, connecting sharers and downloaders is not contingent on a 3rd party tracker. For example, when MGoVideo.com took their bittorrent tracker down, theoretically (I believe it's still up for the time being, not sure how long this will be the case) the ability to connect people sharing/people downloading was lost. The key method obfuscates this by building the 'tracker' directly into the client; if someone has the shared key and someone is sharing, they'll always be able to connect. No 3rd party in the middle.

By shifting the focus in distribution to a forum based community, the fragmented nature of seeding torrent becomes a bit more manageable; the focus then becomes on building a community, which happens to share content, as opposed to hitting a page and downloading a static  file that may or may not have someone on the other end of the wire who is sharing the material.

Anyways, Jeff Atwood (codinghorror.com) has a pretty cool piece of forum software called Discourse - http://www.discourse.org/faq/

Discourse is presently in beta however they the entire project hosted on Github. I'm looking for someone who can take what's on Github, deploy it, and keep the codebase up to date as Discourse moves through beta -

If this sounds like something you'd like to contribute to, drop me an email - '[email protected]'

It would be easy to build a site where people could share keys, but it's pretty much the same thing that I just took down. As soon as people find out about it and it becomes useful, the lawyers will come for you. It won't matter that you'd be using a slightly different p2p technology that would annoyingly force everyone to install a new program. The T3Media people still have no idea what bittorrent is. Do you think they're going to care that you're posting keys instead of torrent files? If you're dying to use your bandwidth, I could tweet the keys and post them on FB, but there's no way you can have a Michigan p2p site in 2013 without T3Media all up in your shit. Been there, done that.
