UM Academic All-Big Ten List, 1953-2009 & Academic All-Americans

Submitted by FL on

For those who asked about how many Academic All-Big Ten recipients the football program has had over the years, follow the link below. Over the last 10 years, we've had between 7-12 per year, with a high of 16 in 2005:

For Academic All-Big Ten:

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

For All-American

The nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable). Nominees are ineligible until the completion of one full calendar year at his/her current institution and attainment of sophomore athletic eligibility.

So the 8 this year wasn't wholly atypical?  That blows my mind that UM would have so few on a consistent basis, but again it is a subjective standard of sorts because there are no real normalized classes across universities.

Currently, my understanding is that every player that sees a certain amount of action and has the minimum GPA makes Academic All-Big Ten.  It used to be that Academic All-Conference was selected among those players that had the minimum GPA.  The minimum GPA was 3.0 back in the 70s when I was in school.  I am not sure when the change was made.

I mean, when you're All-Universe*, what's the big deal about being named "Academic All-American." *No need to put the limiting qualifier "Academic" in front of All-Universe.
