Wow, embarrassing to admit, but I think I forgot just how incredible Corum is. These highlights of him (I've only made it into the 2nd quarter) are amazing.

If I have a nit to pick, it would be a request to the offensive line: please allow Blake to score on 1st and goal from the 3 rather than 4th and goal from the 1, so that he can save his body some unnecessary wear and tear.

Mr. Brightside will resonate two weeks from Saturday - it can't arrive soon enough.

Go Blue!

P.S. - our tailgate menu is set for the opener.  How is yours coming along?

Have you had the dream yet?

You wake up and you've overslept and

the first game of the season is this afternoon and

you have to rush to assemble everything; your jersey, your hat

and you'll be rushing through traffic

and you're afraid you will miss the band, and the fanfare, and the

new drum major arching impossibly backward towards the turf

and the players will come out and the kickoff will happen and

you might miss it all

because you are late and

you wake up.

And the adrenaline surges. And then you remember

It's not today

But it is...

Soon

Football is coming.

I'm extremely excited to debut a new fixture for the remainder of this year's edition of "There are..."! Of course, considering personal circumstance, it's another one centered around the Michigan Marching Band.

Most people (especially those of this crowd) probably think of the MMB most often from a Michigan Football/College Marching tradition perspective. For that reason, it's easy sometimes to forget that it is also, know, a musical BAND too — just like any other you'd listen to and be a fan of in a non-sports context — and a massively successful one at that!

Of course, there's the live aspect: a rough estimate of the MMB's total combined "show" attendance this upcoming season (all home games, MSU road trip, Band-o-Rama at Hill Auditorium, postseason trips assuming Team #144 plays up to the lofty expectations) stands at approximately 1,068,473. To put that in perspective, Taylor Swift's record-surging "Eras Tour" didn't surpass that number until it got to Nashville's Nissan Stadium in May, after a full five weekends of 2 and 3-show stands. This is all not to mention the fact that the main venue the MMB plays (the Big House), features a larger crowd than most bands of any genre ever get to play for (in relation to the example I used, Taylor Swift did join the list of stadium-attracting artists whose team has talked to the university about playing there, but could not for a whole host of logistical reasons).

This series, however, will cover the studio side of Michigan Marching Band's work, a discography that stretches nearly a century! First up: the 7" (or 45) released under Camden, New Jersey's "Victor Talking Machine Co." label that debuts a recorded version of the MMB in 1926. Under the direction of Wilfred Wilson in December 1925 in Detroit, it features Charles Gayley/Michael Balfe's "The Yellow and Blue," with quite the b-side — Louis Elbel's "The Victors - March." They also recorded Earl Vincent Moore/J. Fred Lawton's "Varsity" but did not release it here...

Can't find an ability to listen to this one online, but if you visit the Bentley you apparently can: https://bentley.mivideo.it.umich.edu/media/t/1_hetey3sm

So glad you asked! As far as streaming goes, the most recent album (Forever Valiant - 2017) is available on YouTubeApple Music, and Amazon Music, and includes Temptation. The MMB's contributions to various artist compilation series (such as "GameDay Faves") are also available on various levels across all the main streaming platforms (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon MusicTidal, etc). Those should also still be available for old-school downloading on iTunes.

More than anything though, the best route to find the biggest recording selection that you can own (and support the band along the way) is by buying physical CDs: In addition to Forever Valiant, the official MMB salescart currently offers 1992's A Saturday Tradition, 2000's It's All About Blue, and 2002's The Victors Valiant — all of which featuring Temptation from their respective eras!

Many of the other albums (and they are awesome) can be bought/listened to secondarily, but that's what this series is for! I recommend you utilize the above options, and check back on here until you see any other specific ones that look appealing to seek out.

AND, of course, you can find practically all of the modern halftime shows (and select pregames) on the Michigan Marching Band YouTube channel, as well as great archival show footage from channels like MMBFan1.

If anyone else is interested in finding a recording of a specific song, please comment under this series one of these days and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction! I've been a collector of such recordings since long before I became a student and band member myself.

Thank you very much.  I’m old school and CD’s are fine with me - which I’ll move to an SD card for listening to on the drive to / from A2 - as well as during tailgating.

I’ll check out the MMB sales cart this evening.

Go Blue!

P.S.  The MMB marches near our tailgate spot before / after games - and, you’d be a most welcome guest.  We’re hosting for East Carolina, Rutgers, and Indiana.
