Some 08 guys

Submitted by lhglrkwg on
I was looking through the recruiting class from last year (this years freshman) and I was just wondering what some of these guys were doing this year and if anyone knows if they'll be playing anytime soon JT Floyd (I actually totally forgot this guy was on the team) Brandon Smith JB Fitzgerald (he's still here right? I think the LBs we lost were Witherspoon and Hill) Brandon Moore Ricky Barnum

had to get his appendix removed so he had to RS. JBF is on special teams and will probably start next year. ricky is RS and brandon moore is the backup TE.

Barnum redshirted. I mentioned this in another thread a while back, but him and Patrick Omameh are impressing the coaches and have a good chance of starting next year. From what I've heard, anyway.

Smith is likely to be a starting safety next year. Fitzgerald has seen time on special teams and very well might be a starting linebacker next year. Don't know about Floyd, he might rotate in as a nickelback. Haven't heard much from Moore--I'm assuming he'll redshirt.

The good thing is they all were redshirted so they all have 4 years of eligibility. Also don't forget about Dan O'Neil. I think a lot of these kids come in with the right frame but may lack the strength to play based on their position. For example - Dan O'Neil is 6'8" and weighs 290+ lbs. But he only benches 275 lbs. By comparison Will Johnson benches 550+ plus lbs., so you see how much strength Dan O'Neil lacks. I think a lot of freshmen who plan on the O or D line, or who play linebacker, are not strong enough to play and require a year of intense weighlifting at the college level to get them prepared. You are correct that the only players we lost were Hill and Weatherspoon.

I doubt Barnum and Omameh will start next year. Maybe one, but not both. The entire offensive line is returning next year (except maybe McAvoy who lost his job to Ferrara, anyway). Ortmann and Moosman will be seniors, so I doubt they'll lose their jobs. Molk will just be a sophomore and he played well. Schilling has started for two years, so I doubt he'll lose his job. The only job I see as a potential opening is the guard position Ferrara holds, but I thought he did a pretty good job for being a position switcher. Since I think Omameh is purely a tackle, I'm guessing he'll be the odd man out and Barnum might be able to earn some PT at guard and/or backing up Molk at center.

Also, I doubt Fitzgerald will move to MIKE and Ezeh to SAM. I think Ezeh is in the middle to stay. If they wanted to move him, I think they would have done so this year and put Thompson in the middle. I think next year will be Mouton at WILL, Ezeh at MIKE, and Evans or Fitzgerald at SAM.
