Solid Verbal - Michigan takes last month - Chris Brown / Herb Hand / Mike Hall interviews...

Submitted by TESOE on

I just listened to the last 4 episodes of Solid Verbal (commuting.)  Guests Chris Brown (much of interest here) - Mike Hall (surprisingly informative about the B1G Network)  - Herb Hand (OL coach @ Vandy - Malzhan compadre at Tulsa - TE coach under RR @ WV - bright coach) - Frank Spaziani (BC coach).  Here are the Michigan takes...

Dan Rubenstein (show co-host) calls Mich out as a Bowl team - due to improved D, Schedule and something from the secondary (anything will do).  He also calls the CU hire a good one - so - so much for his opinion.

Mike Hall has trivial but novel insight on coaches.  Hoke never wore red at Ball State or SDState due to his feelings for the school down south.  Hoke does not eat anything on gamedays.

Hand talks about recruiting OL to spread O and in general - what he looks for.  Spaziani talks about OL recruiting and DL recruiting.

There is much love for Indiana's new coach as well as Minnesota's chances of making a bowl game this year (that seems like a stretch.)

Anyway ... good listening - especially Chris Brown and Herb Hand interviews.  Chris Brown talks about running the Power O and takes from the BCS championship.  Off season is prime time for Solid Verbal.

FYI...it's hard to find good content in the offseason - though it takes awhile to listen to these it is on topic and high caliber.

Herb Hand interview was overrated. But then, so is Herb. Tulsa did well under Gus. Then Gus left and Herb had problems. Then Tulsa hired Malzahn's doppelganger Morris. And Tulsa thrived. Herb ain't bringing paradise to Vandy.

I give credit to Herb for showing Gus what he knows about the spread running game. At Springdale HS Gus preferred to throw as soon as he got off the bus. But then, at Arkansas Gus was the inspiration for the Wildcat. Somehow I think Gus would have managed at Tulsa without Herb.

point.  I think he will make a great head coach.  Vanderbilt is like NU in many ways - but in the SEC.  The ceiling there is pretty short.  He won't have to do much to do a lot.  The defensive lineman he has to scheme against makes his job pretty undoable...especially given the academic standards of Vanderbilt.

I liked his run down on evaluating OL talent.  His major point is flexibility.   You can teach footwork but you can't teach that kind of flexibility that a big man needs to squat without lifting his heels off the ground.  He was an advocate for recruiting smaller and building up rather than tearing down to build back up (when freakish athletes who can do it all aren't around.)

If Herb became a Div I head coach I know I'd be looking for places to bet my shekels against him.

Herb is a bright guy. He knows Xs & Os. He is good to have on a staff. But you want him working with someone else, not running an offense. I would say he's kinda sorta the offensive answer to Bob Davie. Davie might know more about defenses than any man in the game not named Bill Arnsparger. But as a head guy........
