Tom Brady tells Joe Burrow that one of the best decisions the Bengals QB ever made was leaving "that god-forsaken place," Ohio State.

I remember getting Tom Brady's autograph with my son during one of those media day events in the late 90's at the Big House. Brady was sitting at a card table with nobody around him. His coach and the top starters were aligned all along the far sideline attracting all the fan attention.

What always impressed me about Michigan sports and their athletes is the remarkable character of those whom I met or briefly contacted. It never mattered what the sport or the situation, the athletes always demonstrated high character. And Brady was no different in the brief moment of our exchange. He signed and I wished him well.

On the greatest day of Michigan football in my life, Tom Brady warmed up on the sidelines alongside the other backup qbs as Brian Griese and the rest of his teammates prepared to meet the Buckeyes on a cold gray Saturday in late November 1997.  His throwing motion was the same as it was his entire career. He stood out to me on the sideline for some reason. Not sure why.

When I think about Michigan football in those days, I think of that year specifically, but I also think of how Tom Brady faltered in the years that followed, and how that altered our feelings about the program in those painful losses. I saw him lose to Syracuse and Illinois. I also saw him beat Purdue with Drew Brees. Remarkable how those games helped mold their NFL capability and shaped their Hall of Fame credentials.

Brady's career at Michigan was a struggle, a challenge that honed his desire and commitment to be the best he could be going forward. The fact that he had to fight for playing time while the fan base clamored for Drew Henson, was as much a personal battle as it was for the heart of Michigan nation and his coach, Lloyd Carr. And Carr seemed to relish his qb conflict. When repeatedly asked about it, he would say, "I like'm both."

But he knew those pressures and challenge. He recognized the vagaries of being a backup quarterback and fighting to get a chance to lead his team. He knew how it went.

Brady won the last major Jan. 1 bowl game Michigan has played in. He beat Alabama in the Orange Bowl, something no other Michigan team has done since then. The team went 10-2 and finshed No. 5 in 1999 in the final rankings. Brady was among three team captains that season.

He proved his college mettle and then demonstrated his high Michigan character in becoming the greatest quarterback in NFL history. I will never forget it.

He's retiring ..... come over Tom ... be the new Head Coach for Michigan!  Let's Go!

And yes .. even with no head coaching experience I WOULD love to actually see that as I know he would totally put in 100% effort to make it work as his work ethic and time preparing is the reason he was such a great QB.

Yep .... it will never happen.
